Question 94 Tracker 5 speed shifter issue

I have a 94 2dr 4X4 Tracker and lost the transmission when the countershaft plug fell out causing the tranny to run low on oil. When you hear the noise it's gone. I purchased a used trans (1996) from Lightning. Resealed the trans and replaced the clutch and installed the shifter assembly from the 1994 to the 1996 trans. After installation I had a little trouble getting it to shift into any gear. Finally I could easily shift into 1,2,3,4 OK 5 & R were a no go. Finally got it to shift in reverse and 5th but now I can only use 2nd, 3rd and reverse. I have driven the car using 2nd & 4th all is OK and quiet, reverse works great. I am thinking I have an issue with the shift assembly maybe the reverse lockout? I plan to pull the shift assembly and check it with the old trans. Is there a compatability issue with the 1994 shifter and 1996 trans?
Hoping I can fix this without having to pull the trans & transfer case again.

Thanks
Greg

could you, mean someone pulled the reverse idler bolt on right side of tranny, thinking it
is filler plug, (catastrophic mistake) as the mount in side swivles and now you can not put bolt back in ! NO , you said correct,
http://carfix.stufftoread.com/tranny.../problems1.jpg

some lose the 2 rubber plugs, #13,
ahhh, you are correct....
yes, part 36 counter shaft plug, OUCH ! that would drain all oil to the center dry case.
and out bottom vent hole.
I saw one , some guy epoxied that dry case drain hole closed then overfilled to top mark.
94 < 96
i looked at the shift box and the forks., selectors and rails. etc.
all the parts have same pn cept the box it self.
I suspect it is small diff.? there are 2wd and 4wd boxs (extension housing = box)

Replace if bad, 19 and 27 the latter is very important. if missing or dust, will cause lever to move to extremes and hit top hat.

the guts: (ext. housing)

if non of above.
see business end.
http://carfix.stufftoread.com/tranny...ail-box-1w.JPG

acid test, remove top extension housing. (last resort)
if you can shift prefect with a giant screw driver on these slots, then tranny is good.
obviouslly in drive way only. but is valid.
but i think it might be hard getting the housing off, as it is up and under the floor pan.

id did this with tranny on floor.
electric drill on pilot shaft and then shifted the heck out of it before puting on housing extinsion. then put Housing, on , then shifted the heck out of it again with 1/2 drill motor. ( as a crash box)
I put elect. tape on tip of pilot shaft. to protect surface.

points 2:

the first link.
shows the screws 36, they are harnened shoulder screws and not really screws.
they work with the top hat and allow it to swisth lock down solid.
if that fails (common on Sammi's most likely huge miles) the top hat drops loose and shifting will Suck.
also some people put soft hardware store screws in there ,and this has no hope.

slinding the main rails and FEELING the detents work is important, as is testing the lock outs.
got to 1st, check all 3,4,5,R locked out. etc.

btw the plug is supposed to be glued in with that specail suz, sealant.
tribond 1211, same stuff as spilt case seal .

cheers.

Thanks for the response. You pretty much layed out my plan of action. I am hoping to get the shifter cover off by lowering the rear X member and tilting the rear down to get clearance. If all else fails I'll have to pull it out. NOTE: on the 94 transmission the isn't a drain hole for the oil. That was part of my problem when I heard the noise I checked the fluid and it was low but no oil was leaking out of the case. The 96 unit has a drain notch so a leak will be easily detected. I will post the final out come when I get it resolved.

bummer,no drain notch in dry center case.

make sure shifter rod , tip is not missing that plastic tip.
it is very necessary to proper shifting and slack reduction.
Im sure you know this.

cheers.

Smile Final Resolution

Thanks foor the tip. Iwas aware of the plastic collar but not the Block for the tip of the shifter. Removed the X member and lowered the trans/transcase until the dist hit the firewall (16 valve). removed the shifter assembly (tight fit but doable) removed the plate and there in the corner was the bushing. Replaced the bushing and buttoned everything up and now all is well. Thanks for the tip!!!
