Default 94 1.6 16valve sidekick engine knock

I have a 94 1.6 16valve sidekick and it just started out of no where knockin bad.

It does it when its idoling and and when im drivin over 2.5 grand and it does it the worst when I am driving down the road and barely hold the gas down to keep it steady...

When I get on it the noise gets lound them when I let off the gas and let the motor just wind down it dont make no noise...

The motor has no miss and runs completely fine.

Now I didnt know what all it could be. I aint to familier with these over head cam motors. do the motor have lifters or not? That my be a dumb question lol...

I might need to try and find an engine diagram

we have it.

16v has tbelt and if pistons hit valves. bye bye engine.
rod knock if even in neutral. and is double knock. nah knock. repeat. (the progresses to full time) worse at ilde at any floating rpm. (may hide with load, at first)
but the lower big end rod bearing can make noise full time. (depends on severity)
any load tends to stop knock on rods.
if big end bearing is loose. it drops oil pressure big time.

mains are deep noise , under power. (loss of oil pressure again)
piston slap is usually only cold. fades with heat. or improves.

valves make a loud tick ,never a knock.

id never drive any 16v engine making any knocks.
if it is just a cheap tbelt, you saved the engine.(should be full time, knock)

this is a SOHC , engine with 16 valves and lifters and are hard lash setting type.
no hydra. lifters here ,like you find on a 1.8L Sport. Solids.

i assume oil level is good, and oil light is out and check engine lamp is out running.

yes, have diagrams, what do you want.?
there are hundreds of photos, in the FSM. huge amount.

id stop engine.
id , check the ignition timing , carefully.
crank at TDC - 5 deg. (setting point)
look at rotor in dizzy , mark the dizzy (distributor) for this exact position. at side of case.
now make sure this line , lines up with the center line of the Dizzy #1 (or 4)

spark wire terminal , EXACTLY, if it is off by more then 1/8 inch , suspect Tbelt slip.
that is the GONO GO test for the TBELT.

the best way is to pull front cover (dust cover it is) and check belt , cogs and timing)

could be front crank pulley coming lose. torque it to 94/ft/lbs. (new spec)
easy to test , just lay a 17mm deep wall on it and if loose ,it is.

could be pinging ? detonation/ due to grosslean mixture.?

it can be many things.
end play on cranks.
cracked crank. cracked pistions, , many.

test oil pressure, if low, you have bad bearings or a bad pump., or valve lifter rail caps loose? leaking oil of off main gallery?

killing injection 1 at at time can isolate a bad cyclinder.
also
a stethoscope can work wonders on finding where noise is actually coming from.

if car is super lean , add propane to intake see if knock drops away.
these cars no not Pinged easy. very good combustion champer design.

hope it is simple and not any real damage.

cheers.
