Electrical issues driving me nuts
I have an electrical issue that is not making any sense to me or how to track it down. I'm hoping someone has some ideas of how to track this down.
It started with my radio dying intermittently for a few seconds at a time every few minutes or so. After about a week it was completely dead and will not turn on so it's like it's not getting any power. I didn't care about the radio at that time so I didn't bother fixing it.
A week or so later the instrument cluster lights for the speedometer and tachometer, all the backlighting for heating controls, headlights and brake lights etc would start cutting out as I was driving and coming back on again randomly. When this happens, turn signal lights and some indicator lights on the dash (such as 4WD indicator, seat belt, parking brake indicators etc) still work.
Then it started to about 70% of time be dead when I started the car but would come on if I left the car running for 5 minutes or so.
After a week of this, I started smelling a burnt plastic smell coming from the vents but couldn't find where it was coming from.
Now a few days later, the car was completely dead when I went to start it. Checked the battrery with a multimeter and it was good. Then I checked the fuse box and noticed the entire bottom of it had melted (I guess this is where the smell was coming from) and one fuse was blown. I went and got a new fuse, dissassembled the fuse box and put it back together cleanly so nothing is shorting out there anymore.
However, now I'm back to the same problem as before. Car starts fine, some instrument cluster lights work and the turn signals work but no other lights and the radio is still dead. I've turned the lights on and wiggled every cable I can find anywhere to see if there is a bad connection but nothing works and I'm going nuts over this.
