Default Fast idle

Hi All,
for some strange reason my 89 Vitara idles at around 2k until warm at which time it drops to around 500 and idles well.
Any idea's why it idles so fast when first started?

thanks

Carb or fuel injected? Have you checked for vacuum leaks?

Thanks for the responses guys.
It's a carby model. It's almost like the auto choke (if it has one...I'm assuming it does) is staying on for too long.

Would the alternator cause this issue?

alternator is joke.
id check air in spare tire,,,,,,,

this is a carbi,
it has lots of adjustments.

the choke has a fast idle
as does, throttle plate have a hot idle.

set hot idle 1st
then cold choke fast idle last.

cheers.

no.

unless you can find a FSM or get real lucky and find an old Haynes or Chiltons ,etc book
that happens to have the 1 of many carbs used, then no.

but if you car has a tradional type carb. with top Butterfly clutch plate then yes.
I do not know, for sure. but...

if it does its the old fashioned common type.
look at the linkage from the choke chamber on side of carbi.

it closes the choke plate. make sure it dont close its butterfly too much for your climate.
this is only something that can be done with experience in your location.
too much choke = flood city.

then on said chamber is a rod.
the rod goes to the main throttle linkage.
allows (helps) the main throttle to open a tad when cold (unloader does this)
on some carbs there is a screw adjust for this, others you bend the dog leg in the rod.

hot adju. for this carb. that can be more difficult.

if no manual this is my though process.
first look for a screw mounted the main throttle plate bell crank.

see this
http://carfix.stufftoread.com/fresh-...rfly-gap1w.jpg
this is NOT a carb, but the method is identical. see screw.
that is idle.
if the screw is missing, then your carb has an Air bleed , instead of a screw.
to find that , I pull all body adjust screws and look at them
if they are brass and have a needle , that is not it (idle mix) if it is just a crude
steel screw with roundish tubulare shaft , or a cone , then that is the air bleed, bingo Idle air.

this is all I can do with out seeing your carb.
there are many many diff, carbs.
It's like an ART form, some carbs are.....

hope that makes sense.
there are carb links.
general , not the best but...

Have asked around to try and find carb settings for my 93 8v carby Vitara. I didn't see and the only stuff I found is some stuff from a Mitsubushi forum site. I couldn't find out what type of Mikuni is on my car (except for a aluminium tag stating "60A3") but the diagrams in the attached were very useful. Just stripped mine, new seals/gaskets from Nardek and set the car up again. Runs sweet now. Just need to sort out the usual cracked manifold.........
