Default Auto choke problems

I know the age of my beast 1985, is before your time on here
But I have a problem with the auto choke on my vitara 1600.
The choke is failing to open as the engine warms up, causing the tick over to run at 2.5k and flooding the carb when trying to start the engine when it's warm.
is there a knowledge base or can any one give me a heads up on stripping the auto choke, and repairing it?

Thanks in advance
Mick

Automatic Choke

Goodluck, that website seemed a bit informational. Cold weather really messes with em.

chocks (real ,not enrichening devices) are all basically the same.

there 3 types
i have no idea what yours is ,cuz PL dont say.

1: electric
2: exh. heat choke stove.
3: water.

but doesnt it matter, they all work the same way , it gets hot and it opens due to the action of the bi-metal spring inside.

you failed to say is the problem cold or hot start or both?

issues:
sticking gunked up linkage
maladjusted linkage (needs to be calibrated)

bad bi-metal spring. (as they age they get sluggish, ALL)

you are in England so no USA where the choke spring is riveted down. Happy feet.

ok, on the out side of the choke unit can be 3 screws, loosen them and rotate the choke
for less choking action. (many carbs have this. )
look for choke shaft and butterflies on top.

NO CHOKE BUTTERFLY VALVE ON TOP?
if your car has an enriching device. then that is a horse of another color.
it is an extra jet really.
if it leaks , it will make engine too rich.
it must be examined.

below is oldest carb for VITARA i could find.
the names are useless, eg: diaphragm, but no function names.

recommend finding really old Vitara , manual , Haynes or the like.

no all carbs are the same.
then newer they got, the worse they got, Complexity beyond even EFI.

hope this helps.

Thanks Jtgh, Thats a whole lot of help actually.
My carb is an Asian (i think) ans is water heated it seems as though the linkage may have jammed, come adrift, or broken as the butterfly is fully closed all the time.
but as I have no clue as to what I'm doing I wanted to get as much info as possible before going out there fooling ariound.
