My OBD1 Computer won't reset..Check Eng Light stays on..I am pretty sure you just pull the battery (-) cable and wait. I even waited 20 minutes. Is my Computer Toast? Or is it something else.

Th ecar seems to run fine. For someone like me, who has been fixing cars for many years..a Check Engine Light drives me CRAZY. But the good thing is I went out and changed the Fuel filter, Air Filter, MAPS sensor, PCV filter..

maps never fail, ouch, that was big money.
8V engine, obviously , year?

ok, tune up , when and miles ago?

First off these cars ( you didnt say what car at all, year or anything )
but i know it is older than 96 ( obd1 is pre 96)
this ECU DTC NEVER cries ,unless it is a serious problem (unlike OBD2)
Never. DTC = Diagnostic trouble codes. but......

pull the battery or the Dome light resets the memory , nothing else.
it will not fix the car by doing that, it will only make diagnosing it harder.

It is like going for 1 year check up with the DR. then trashing the blood work, (not looking at it) Many people here , hate DTC's and for no reason. I love them,
they tell me car is going to die before I go far and wide, not getting stranded is cool. huh?

On this car , one ONLY need s a paper clip to ROLL out the codes on the CEL.
1/4 cent tool. Now is that not cool or what. LOL.

ok, this light is Shared on All low year 90 Kicks Fed48 ( calif cars are missing SES)

SEL = 50k NAG. 80k and all permutations for ever ( unless you unplug the SES slider)

or
CEL = DTC ( diagnositc codes active, please get them)

Look at the ODOMeter. is it 50k 80 100k 150k, 180k? or ?
IT is just a mileage counter the SES function and is brainless.

the CEL DTC is very useful.
that is all there is on that.

cept.

Check Engine Lamp stuck ON?

PS
btw, just pull the SES nag switch on the back of the SPEEDo, has 4 pins
and has the silly backwards lock, spread the lever , do not squeese like all the others.
unpug it and never be SES nagged for ever.
mine is now.

its only purpose is to make dealers rich, resetting the silly thing , then a full tune up and CAT con and o2 later.........

sorry for your trouble , but this is the top post here...

Cheers.

Thanks JTGH its a 92 Geo Tracker 8V that grows on me everyday more and more.
I went through that period of my life where i had to have a Volvo, SAAB or Mercedes and then I got burned out of having Cars you treated like Living Room Furniture, it was a Major Hassle. Rebuilding Turbo's, Diesels, swapping engines and interiors and bodywork are fun only until you are 40.

Dents and dirt and rust look better on a Tracker and make it look more attractive. Change the oil and forget it

that 8v might run for ever just keep dip stick full all the time.
4quarts in the pan.
your is just like mine.. same engine.

any questions , just ask,

if yours is CALIF. smog stickered, it has NO SES slide switch , anywhere.
on cal cars, all CEL glows running are real DTC fails.

usually gross opens and shorts.

cheers.
