Default engine cutting out

This just started doing this. 92 geo 8v efi, I will be driving along and all of a sudden its like it runs out of gas. I pull over and after several trys, it starts back up. I have to keep pumping the gas pedal and it like it cleans itself out.Is this fuel filter, fuel pump, or dirty injectors. Thanks

im kicking,

tune up.

if it dies, see if it is flooding and or lossing spark.
or
has lots of spark and no wet plugs , but starts with test fuel (instant start in a can)

that is a start.
no pun.
cheers

tuneup within last 5000 miles. Car ran great until yesterday. Do fuel pumps get hot and tie up, then let them set and work ok then.

of course., they can do what every they please. truely.
some die , only at 3000 rpm.

some will restart by smacking the tank. or the fuel pressure regulator (front of TB )
TB=throttle body.
are you sure car is not simply flooding, Hold down pedal gas, to floor , engaging secret unflood mode (kills all injections when you do that)
on reastart do you smell gas? yes, then it is flooding.
if you suspect flooding pull a spark plug, is it wet or dry. (age old test )
if wet it is flooding,
if not wet then car is starving for fuel
if car is starving for fuel , well give it some fuel, squirt some "instantstartinaspraycan" into the eval nipple. 3seconds.
does car now crank briskly and start and go Verrroooooooo, and stop.?
yes, then the ECU is ok (mostl), the Injector is dead. (or low fuel pressure)

if you have:
good compression.
good spark
and it runs on test fuel then you have fueling problems.

but.... this can be caused by many a thing.
as always, the first thing on anycar is to see if the ECU , is alive and living in Kansas.

keyON, no start, CEL glowing brightly ( (says ECU just passed its diagnositics)
next insert diag, jumper (paper clip) and see that it blicks out code 12. or ?
next test:

pop tank filler tank cap off, put ear to tank , have Mikey , turn key on.
the fuel pump runs for 3 seconds, no more. at key on. (only turns on 3sec, each key one,no more)
so you need a helper or the TRUNK Monkey (LOL) { dont leave home with out him}

YouTube - Trunk Monkey Compilation

here the buzz? (well its running, wires,ecu,ecu fp relay good , ground good) {but could be weak}
so far so good,
no buzz, then bad Fuel pump or its Enabling circuits.

at this point you can go 2 paths.

1: do the Check Injection signals with a NoID lamp (if test fuel runs ok)
followed by pump tests (pressure) if NOID lamp is good and flashing.
2: if car will not run on test fuel or the car is flooding you have a completely diff. problem and that can be many things. (complex)
Flooding can happen with the following ( how says EFI is simple?)

1: loss of spark . on or all 4
2: dead cylinder (compression test)
3: stuck open intake valve, destroying proper induction vacuum,.
4: timing belt slipped, see #3
5: IAC-E stuck closed (staving engine of lots of fresh air for starting)
6: IAC-T thermo(base of TB ) clogged with gunk.
7: throttle valve (butterfly valve in TB , same as 6 and for same reasons.

someone spun the dizzy. ( old schooler's love to spin a dizzy every time a car stops)

i'd did not mention a tune up. yours is complete. ( all wires, plugs, cap rotor and fuel filter and air filter?)

this data should get you on the correct TRACK.

cheers.

I have been driving the tracker to work everyday with no problems since one way is less than 3 miles. The other day I let it idle in the garage and it sat there running just fine until it seems like after about 20 min it stalled and would not refire until it sat for 10 minutes or so. This is how it reacted also when I drove out of town for 25 miles. Seems like there is a heat issue. Will a suspect fuel pump work fine until it gets hot and then die until it cools??? Or is there a sensor that heats up and shuts fuel pump down?? thanks

hot soak issues.
make it fail.
check spark pronto.
then on an 8v you can watch injection. plus add instant start spray.
spark or fuel , find which path first.

not all dead pumps are dead pumps.
do you have 12vdc to the 2 hidden pump connections at rear bumper , AND pump dont spin[buzzz] or pump will not make 30psi?)

if you have low fuel pressure?
then dont condem the pump, pinch the FP regulator return hose, if pressure goes why up to 60psi, then pump is perfect, the FP regulator is bad.

but if it is bad , rockauto dot com has them.

Fuel-pump-testing

how to test the pump and associated parts.

updated with 96-98 spec too. (for those looking)

about 50% find changing pump , does not fix the problem. (as experienced here)
