Default 1990 tracker trans case

I'm driving my tracker on ice and snow for the first time and I notice there is (in 4wd - engaged and not) a high pitched whine coming from the front end. Also, while climbing in incline, I was informed that the rear wheels would spin, but the front wheels would not. Is the transfer case designed to slip? There is definitely power going to the front as indicated when shifting in and out of 4wd on ice. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

no, its not supposed to slip. I'm guessing your ft diff or transfer case is about ready to die. Change the fluid (it's most likly low) and see what happens
