Default Auto Tranny Shift Issue....

Is there a way to set the shift points with a 1990 Tracker 3sp tranny? I have found that my tranny will shift fine when done manual but shifts out of 2nd gear way too early and does not want to shift into 3rd correctly until I get a little fast. If I shift from 2nd into drive it is fine. Not sure if this one has hydro servos or electronic. How can I find out??

I have changed the kick-down cable and vac mod, both are adjusted correctly and good....

adjust the kick down cable looser or tighter. (hack)
3 speed is not electronic, only 4sp is.

the vacuum modulator could be bad,(leaking) it senses load on engine.

Well, as I said in the original post, I have installed a new kick down cable and adjusted it correctly by the specs (waste of $$ as the old one was fine). Installed a new vacuum modulator and had it tested to make sure it was correct (waste of $$ as the old one was still good and had more adjustment on it then the new OEM one).

It must be a week servo in the tranny that shifts it out of 2nd too fast and not fully into 3rd. That is the only area I have issues with. Shifts fine other then that...

it is not a waste. ( a new tranny is $1500 to $2000 + labor)
you have 2 choices, with any automatic, (it is very complex no?)
do the easy checks or get a pro.

check everything it says in the fsm or the suppliment for tranny (i have it , it can be emailed or i have alink)
or here.
Slush pump diagnosis

Im sure you saw my Signature link, and clicked it.

we are not about guessing and throwing parts at any engine or transmission.
examination, , testing, then replacing.
we are about saving money.

we get hundred posts on rusted kickdown cables here, on 18 year old cars.
common as nails.
only you can know where car has been and if it spent its whole life on salted roads.

if all you want to do is set shift points, then you need a pro.
none of the factory data show anything about that.

the first thing to do is to id the tranny. "M65 =3sp Auto 3L30" open glove box read white tag see m65?
the numbers are on my link.
then find a mechanics forum on automatics, th
then post your question to the experts in this field.

I am no tranny expert,
all i know is how to discover if the tranny can be fixed in car. nothing else.

I see a full manual here.

see link with "both".

first , is it operation normally, the manual above will tell you the exact shift points and how to test them.

shifting early saves fuel.
shifiing late , makes for faster performance.

How to tune that, i am not sure. ( valve body and , modulator, and governer are key)
but there are kits for many tranny's that can do exactly that.
also firmer shift kits.

btw,
once you clearly id the tranny.
look on the left bottom side cover , see this.
get these nums, then go to any tranny parts houses (google works)
and call them and ask for shift kit. That is a better answer
