I have a 94 tracker with an 8 valve automatic. For the second time, the check engine light came on and I cannot get a code reading as to what the problem is. I have had two different mechanics check it out and they cannot obtain any codes. The first time the light came on, the code for the EGR valve popped up and I had it replaced. This time, no codes came up. I have had it scanned and we also went ahead and did the old school method of removing the 3rd fuse and disconnected the neg on the battery, but the light would not even blink. The last mechanic suggested that it could either be the light itself is bad or possibly the instrument cluster is defective. I have no idea. The only other thing that happens, is that the brake light will come on, go off and then stay on. The brake light was on when I had purchased the car two years ago, and the blinking part is the only thing different now. If anyone can suggest what I should do next, I would appreciate it. Some said to junk it, but I love the damn thing!

How many miles has it done? Has it just passed 50K or similar? if so it could be the SES. Search the forum and you will find a number of similar threads.

1 step at a time. (you choose , brakes or engine?)
if your car is a federal 48 model, (smog sticker says under hood) and not calif. model
than your car does have the mileage nag, every 50k (read the page)
HIDDEN switch (Napolean Solo thought that up, from U.N.C.L.E)
usually 99% the egr parts are good and the pipes clogged with carbon. code 51
Unplug the silly nag switch. and then when you get a CEL , it is real.
The brake lamp has 4 functions.
to find out which of the 4 is signalling you must unplug them 1 at a time.
kinda like musical chairs.
unplug order (best for sore backs)
1: hand brake off. ( might have to unplug actual switch under console but usually not)
2: brake fluid level switch)
3: brake diff press. switch just below #1
4: Unplug Rwal controller conn.
unplug them sequentially, when light goes out, bingo.
if #4 is prob. then that is whole nother ball of wax. see pages. on link.
The car currently has 101,000 miles on it. What is the SES? Sorry, but I am not totally savy with car abbreviations.

The car has 101,000 miles on it right now. What is the NAG switch and where is it located? As for brakes, the fluid level is fine, Hand brake is off and I have not tested the others mentioned. The Rwal controller conn, are you referring to the module or ? Sorry to sound dumb!
all three lamps,

ok , my link above covers all three lamps failures.
CEL + SES.
check engine light & Service engine soon lamp (a nag only function).
your SES is tripped and has been glowing for 1000 miles, right.
so now you must find the hidden SES reset switch. all this is explained on my CEL page.
HERE AGAIN>>>> Blinking-Lamp
just click the links, links have under bars, on this and all forums.
first things first.
find the switch , as my Cel pages shows 2 different locations, and how to find them.
The SES is just a mileage NAG ,
the SPEEDO has a silly switch the rolls over at 50k and 80k and all permutations forever.
it does nothing at all, cept glow the CEL lamp and drive folks crazy.
now , the Brake lamp,
again, the link above , explains the whole story of the Brake lamp
it too is a shared lamp, it is shared by 4 functions.
all of the brake related.
RWAL = rear wheel antilock brakes. (ABS minus 2 wheels)
lets do this serially
SES.
I cut the below , right out of my CEL page.
"
Finding this silly switch is real pain, in the back side:
My 91 JX 2D:
The SES mileage cancel switch , can only be felt on 91's , and never seen. pop off plactic cover directly under steering column.
Feel downward with hand. Click real Photo below to see my 91'.
Friends: 92 JX :
"It was to the left of the steering column, under the plastic, where the mirror switch is located"
Took 5 mechanics to find it (at least).
Next person said his 95 had this SES near the left speaker, other poster said remove speaker Left and it is in plain view.
You are a guiness! I followed your directions to the letter and there was that damn switch. I flipped it, turn the car on and off the light went! I haven't checked the brake light yet, but will do that another day. Thanks again!
no hurry, my RWAL is still flaky too. as is many here.
once the dump solenoid goes bad, dont even ask the price of that.
its on my long list on bottom. hahahaha
loosly related:
Im thinking of making 4 LED tiny panel, that inputs the 4 inputs for the brake lamp.
winter projects are like that.
right now im fabing up a new instrument panel for below my Radio.
with a much of gauges, (just got them)
Fuel pressure, Volts, Oil Pressure. delete ash tray, move 12v cig plug to right side of console. with room for more gauges later. and Put LED status there too.
im going to use thick 0.10" aluminum polished first, then machine turned trick.
Just hand mand nothing fancy.
Forgot to tell you that I had found that stupid switch. Mine was mounted to the steering column, but was turned up, so that I had to really dig around to find it. I will attempt the brake light procedure that you had provided and see what becomes of that. I think the selinoid is the part that the mechanic said was wrong with mine, but hopefully not.
