Default Looking for a tracker....need input

Hi guys, love the site. I have been off-roading for about 15 years. My last few vehicles were JEEP Wranglers with my last one being a rubicon all done up. Had to get rid of it cause I needed a truck. Now Im looking for a tracker and dont have alot of money so Im hoping you guys can help me out. My plans is to egt a tracker, do a suspension lift and a body lift and I would like to run 33" tires, reason being thats what alot of people run around here and the trails are pretty rutted up and you dont get far with 31"s. So.... What should I look for? I have heard there are 8 valve and 16 valve, which is better? Also I read that if you get a auto that you can swap manual diff gears to help with the sluggishness from bigger tires, true or untrue ? Is a auto better then a manual? What about the years ? are some better then others ? There is also a 02 chevy tracker local that has a "check engine light" on and it will start but shuts off after a few seconds. Hes asking $1000 does this sound like a good deal ? Sorry for all the questions but I want to make sure I get the write one.

Also what are some good sites for info or other forums on trackers, sidekicks?
I have found calmini.com but thats it.

Hey whats up? You can try cardomain. Its a nice site mostly for people who like to show their cars off. Theres one in particular ([url=http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2143213]) he's got a lot of links listed for his tracker as far as 4x4 goes. If you do an advanced search for trackers you will see several raised trackers. Might help you some.

$1000 for an 02' sounds like a great find even with the check engine light, It may need an ECM they have always been troublesome on all Trackers/sidekicks, it could be a really bad emssions prolbem & have bad cats.
I think twisting & turning you could very easily drop another $1000 into it to get it running right, even still $2Gs isn't a bad deal.

Is it a auto. or man. trans? 4WD? Hard top or Rag?

Trackers are pretty durable tough littel trucks, go to youtube & you will find a bunch of videos of people out & out abusing there tracks, flipping em over numerous times, jumping things, they always start right back up.

It might be as simple as a tune up, or bad cap which could be cracked, timing could be off or it could be one of thing I stated above. Is it driveable? Does it smooth out under load (acceleration)?

If it is driveable, take it for a spin, makes sure the 4WD works & the transfer case engages. check out the low range in 4WD too & get back to us.

How many miles?

rough idle.?
could be just ignition, or a dead cylinder.
if he refuses a compression test. then assume head or block is cracked.
be happy with less.

i dont know 2002 efi, does it have coil on plug, it could be just a dead cop
and firing off P030n all the time.
or just a dead injector.
get a code reader on it.

might be easy fix too.

it is a good price.

well the 16 valve MFI has about 15 more horse power than the 8 (i think throttle bodied) but the 02 has something else i think a 2.0 4 cylinder and maybe a 6 cylinder as oppose to the 1.6's that are in the older ones pre 98's. i can't speak much for the 02 but your going to want a manual esp w 33's(stock gearing with a manual is 5.12 and that is with stock tires, 33's with stock gearing i don't know if it will even move) another good forum is zukiworld.com and that forum is mostly about offroading. they were,nt changed much over the years. after 98 is the second generation. i hope this helps a little

The 2.0 has different gear ratios, they are something like 4.8 to 1 so you can fit 5:12s to lower the gearing. Zukiworld has a 99-05? forum, I think that there is one here too.
