first off , so , you are one of those guys that actually lift up on the gas to shift.
I never knew it could be done that way , ahahahhehehehehhe LOL !

ok, all seriousness aside.

we have same exact car (cept tranny)

I can only presume tranny is ok, is it? you have a tacho, can you do a load test.? in each gear..checking for slippage.

you look like you've done lots of good work on it.

if water is not 180Deg. F.
then stat is missing or bad, wrong PN, wrong temp , or missing parts.
stat is missing rubber O-ring ( seems every one throws this away and coolant then bypasses the stat , making stat ,just useless.
Pop out stat, look in hole in manif. is the grove pocket 1mm or 4mm deep. (the ring STAT drops into)
if 4mm it MUST have the O-RING stat. (same as 1.8L must have)
how to purchase parts

now power,
questions: do you have WOT power, floor the sucker in 1 , or gear 2.
WideOPEN Throttle ( hot or cold engine, oops always cold)

if now power hot and cold under light heavy or WOT.
then your fuel pressure is way low.
Fuel-pump-testing
while standing at TB, Throttle body, give fuel reg on front of TB a sharp Rap.
it might be stuck wide open.

looks like low fuel pressure to me.

it can be many things but on 8v far far fewer than 16v.
cam slipped belt.
timing set wrong cam or dizzy.

we can find, for sure. dont give up.

cheers.

It is very important that the STAT be fixed first, EFI will make car RICH AS a pig if not.
and flood, 15mpg, foul plugs, stall, stink and melt the guts out of the CAT CON.

always make sure car hits 180 better , 192-195 stat with correct rubber piece.
see proper fit here.

tranny is fine, took thermo out looks good very clean and spring has good tension ,rubber casket good.fuel pump runs 3 seconds.tapped fuel reg. blew air thru it.
Waiting on bango adapter to run pressure check on fuel pump(am thinking after all i have replaced this is suspect culpert)will check for slipped timeing belt.
WOT in gear not good, could be fule pump?????
thanks for reply

your 8v has a banjo with a 6mm screw in the side, remove screw attach gauge.
see my photos , that is 8v photos.91 (all 8v have a fuel test port at filter)

your thermostat socket has a deep 4mm ring depth? (1/8 Inch 0.15748 Inches)?
AND IT HAS THE RUBBER GASKET that makes it fill the whole depth of the 4mm and make the stat press against the upper housing surface.?
this action makes seal a perfect fit.
stove test: (wait for wifey poo/ GF to go xmas shopping.....) rinse off part outdoors first.
make sure stat begins to open in a pan of high rising tap water , at 180F. NO LESS.
BEGINS to OPEN! not sooner or it is BAD.
that's the acid test for the STAT and for fitment. 180F is OEM Value.

W.O.T, being bad suggests , bad pressure or gross timing error.
I can only presume compression is good on all 4. (and no vacuum bouncing)
Compression reading 90 lbs on all for , indicates belt slip too.

it might be possible to check belt with out total dis assembly. (my little theory)
just remove most front cover bolts and tilt the cover FWD.
crank to TDC 0 mark. top cam mark aligned to top back cover pan mark .
if not rotate crank 360 more, more, it must align now,
if not, belt is bad and so is timing.
that is my fast check of cam. I think it works., let me know. if you learn a trick or two.
timing belt swap

link see marks ,first foto above. (same exact engine)

doing a fuel pressure test is a fast check.
if if good , and filter is fresh, I think injector is going to be ok. (inj, has respectable screens too)
on 8v :
they love to make power, MAP based is very reliable way to inject.
KEYelements:
fuel pressure , timing and compression (your spark is good.)

I forgot to say the obvious. CEL lamp glowing at key on, no start, then goes out after staring , right?

love the gage idea, after i get things fixed!!!!
140 lbs on all cylnders,no leak down.
have fuel pressure gauge, will not fit without adapter.
will check timeing as you suggest, has to be that or fuel.
check engine goes out after start

I had the same problem and it was the fuel pressure Regulator on the TBI unit,. Napa sells them not cheap. try and crimp the hose from the regultaor back to the tank and see if it runs better..... its located on the front of the tbi unit has a fuel line and vac line on it

yes and both can fail, loss of proper vacuum and
pinching the return line ,yes that will work but no more than a few seconds, ok.
pressure goes to 65psi
injection amounts double (flooding?) and the pump will over heat fast .

this is test 6 on my pump page. (text book tests)

and is a very good trick , to do . thanks for posting that.

if pump is bad, no effect.
if regulator bad, car runs better.
if injector bad, car runs a little better (up to 1/2)?

best test of all is a $10 gauge on the test port on the fuel filter (after replacement). not hard to do.

harbor freight has a lot of $10 tools, not really great quality but 1/10th shop hour rate.
fuel pump, vacuum, timing light , and compression gauge , $40 and you are dangerous.
almost throw away tools at that price.

sorry if you are far from one.

cheers.
