Unhappy Escudo High Idling

Hello,
I have a 91 5Door 1.6L EFI Auto Transmission Escudo. It has 2 main issues (that I know about).
1. Idling (Neutral or P gear) is high at 1.8k rpm and when I put it in drive but stationary, idling drops to 1.4k rpm.
2. It lacks power. Cannot go beyond 90km/hr speed. When going up a hill, it wont exceed 60km/hr and when I have passengers (2 or 3 adults), it just doesn't move. Max speed on level road is 60km/hr. Practically sneaks up a hill with the passengers.
Please advise, it is so frustrating always "sneaking" on the road.

hello slow poke.
i presume this is an 8valve? ,as i do not know year of entry on 16valve engines out of usa.

low power:
8v:low fuel pressure low , clogged up CAT, cracked exhaust manifold?

16v a huge vast list of things. (air leaks , bad maf , or same as 8v shown above, or)

identify the engine exactly ? tell us.

tell me what lid you have (valve cover = lid)

how-to-find-EFI-parts

ps :welcome and cheers !

Wow, thanks JTGH for the quick response. I have been a silent member here for some months and you guys have made me love my Zuk a lot more than before.

I have a 16 valve. Cover exactly like the one in the image from the link you advised.
I am going to read a lot from that site so that I get to know all I can about the parts of my Zuk (I need to learn things like what a clogged up CAT or bad maf is).

I am in Kampala, Uganda (East Africa) BTW and greetings from the City that never sleeps and the womb of the nile.

Welcome, pjkk
very much.
the MAF is just a sensro the measures air flow.
the CAT is the Filter of bad air on beginning of exhaust pipe.
in your country ,some parts might be missing. Like the CAtalyst exhaust filter.
and the EGR valve. (exhaust Gas recirculaiton valve)

most 91's here,usa are 8valves engine..

ON the 16v .
you car could be suffering from loss of fuel or have an air leak.

It takes great patience to trouble shoot a 16v.
id look of for leaks from the MAF ( MAF is a black sensor close to air cleaner with wires)

this point all the way left (looking at engine) is a large pipe and it goes to the
trottle body. It must be tight and no cracks.
look for any loose vacuum hoses.
any loose wires with connectors going now where or better yet any sensors with no wires.
To test the maf requires a volt meter.

On this engine, if it is 16valves, you have an interferance engine.
this means you must not allow the cam belt to snap or break or engine will suffer great damage, piston hitting the valves.
on all 16v engines , i recommend checking the Timing belt for correct timing, or
just do a compression test on the cyclinders.
if the compression is 150 or batter on all 4 , ok. if they all read 90 then immediatly check the belt.
it you car is hight mileage and the front cover is very dirty, id suspect the belt.
it is hidden behind the cam belt cover.

that is the achilles heel. of the engine.

the belt can some times slip just 1 or 2 teeth and you loose most of the power.
and it will slip more, so the power loss some times is a blessing warning you to please check the belt.
it may be fine, but is not worth the risk ignoriing it.
The are good for 60k miles. some cars say 90k but this one is 60.
cheers.
