Default transmission install problem

I got it all inand everything seemed good...same year used tranny...and now I can't shift into 1st, 3rd, and 5th. Did I goof up the install somehow or is the tranny dead.

define, can't shift
1: i grind only those gears , or only upshifting ,or only down shifting.
can shift ,in drive way, hand brake engaged, to any gear by depressing the clutch.

did you inspect the clutch.?
did adjust the clutch free play to 1/2 inch.
did you put fresh GL3 gear lube in tranny (sorry you drained it so , you put new in right)
did you make sure tranny shifted on floor? by spinning pilot shaft and shift with lever. (show and tell, time)
did you look in tranny shift socket and see 3 rails equal before jamming in the shifter. (forms a square box for shift tip)
did you make sure those 2 plastic parts on end of shifter are NOT MISSING OR Broken. really needed they are.
one plastic thingy goes on tip, other is concave washer below steel shift ball on end of shifter.

Did to try my 1 inch rule ,that the clutch cable end at the lever , below bell housing moves 1 inch at least or more when clutch is depressed fully to the floor.?

that is a start.
cheers.

define, can't shift - Goes into 2, 4, R, just fine...acts like 1, 3, and 5 don't exist...
1: i grind only those gears , or only upshifting ,or only down shifting.
can shift ,in drive way, hand brake engaged, to any gear by depressing the clutch.

did you inspect the clutch.? - Yeah...the clutch disc, Pressure plate, and flywheels were all good. I replaced the Pilot since it was toast from the bad input shaft and Throwout bearing since I was under there.
did adjust the clutch free play to 1/2 inch. - I didn't know about the 1/2 inch thing but I guessed pretty close and the cluth is working fine.
did you put fresh GL3 gear lube in tranny (sorry you drained it so , you put new in right) Yup
did you make sure tranny shifted on floor? by spinning pilot shaft and shift with lever. (show and tell, time) - Nope...got in a hurry and I didn't play with it after I got the shifter on.
did you look in tranny shift socket and see 3 rails equal before jamming in the shifter. (forms a square box for shift tip) I suspect that the three forks weren't ligned up...
did you make sure those 2 plastic parts on end of shifter are NOT MISSING OR Broken. really needed they are. I ended up using my old shifter...It looks identical to the one that came off of my tranny wand worked fine. I didn't know to look for the plastic things...
one plastic thingy goes on tip, other is concave washer below steel shift ball on end of shifter. It looks like I have to pull it...I'll check then.

It looks like I'll have to drop the tranny all of the way out to get at the shifter...any tips to avoid that? I suspect that the forks weren't lined up when I put the shifter on...

Thank you for your help!

Damon

Default tranny stuff

yes,

attach1, 19 and 27 plastics must be good.

attach2, you will love. make it like this.

this is what the extension housing drops into, (if it was removed it could be wrong)

the same deal exists on the shift extension shifter box side.
for sure it can be mis-indexed and the linkage jams.

acid test (in car)?

see if you can get all gears to happen, some way any why.
running , not running, ( even with rear tire up and wiggle that can help)

answer , i think? one can drop tranny cross member to remove housing.
theory:
1: jack tail shaft.up and block tranny so cant fall
2: remove cross member.
3: drop rear of tranny, keeping rear prop shaft in place (????_)
so it don't leak gear lube.

i think your statement of cant shift , is
I can not shift the tranny to all the gears, no matter what i do.
(cant can mean , I simply cant , or it can mean I dont like the grinding sound it makes but sure enough it will go into gear)

I am not clear on that.

cheers.

i have lots of tranny photos and you are welcome to them, 100's

There's no grinding for the top gears...It's like they just aren't there. Cool pic.

I'll try dropping the back half and getting in to see if the problem is that they aren't lined up.

NOT THERE , YES.
cool how you can see shift gate huh, H pattern. just backwards.

DID you have that extension housing removed?

drop tail
then feel from below with spanner wrench.

this gate has the nasty habit of blocking shifts if not aligned at get go.(put in)
align them as shown, then put cover back.

cheers
