Default #2 injector not working

one day got in my tracker and started to work it was running very bad! found out from a friend that it was my #2 injector.changed the injector but still running bad.ordered a computer off e bay nat parts. put it in still not working .checked the compression got 150 # on # 1 and # 2 cylinders. can any one please help me thanks doug_9

anyyear 16v mPI. ok.
throwing parts never works,(almost)
one here the this failure , ranks as follows (from the gut)
my i ask why not all 4? were read?
knowing the total paints a very good picture of engine.
like, 150,150, 185,190 <<< see head gasket leaking tiny bit on 1 to 2.?


1: broken injector wires ( noid is dead) (or loss of power blue/black)
2:ECU driver bad. USE a NOID LAMP, better use a DSO. Noid cant find weak one.
3:clogged injector. 10 micron screen inside. clogs easy.
4:minor bent or sticking valves #2 or damaged cam ,(poor lift) [ out of mastermechanic ASE]


i will guess at how you got here
friend pulled #2 injector and found it had no effect.
pulled compression. Ok 150 not too bad.
next should have been the NOID LAMP TEST.
if this test failed, ECU. ( but wiring first to #2)
if this test passed, then check 12vcd to #2 blue black were
good above 12v all times.
then listen to injector with a $3 harbor freight stethoscope.
all sounds alike , cool.
now , read restance of #2 , 12 ohms, good, measure them all , equal, good.
now swap injectors (last cause harder and might munge the o-rings)
did problme move to swapped cylinder.

is changed injector new or used, if used do you have it tested before trying it, no, why?


but stop,how do we know its injector and not SPARK.
what did you do to rule out spark.
did you do a tune up first ,all wires, cap,rotor, plugs.

if this is a 1996 Sport , then I give up , cause that car has a COP.

Default # 2 Injector

Ok thanks for the info this is on a 1998 tracker 1.6 5 speed went back and tried a few things!all four cylinders are reading 160-165 lbs,checked all for wires with a spark plug to ground all four firing. checked with a noid lamp i got from Radio shack. all seem to be firing good signal from computer .i think i got a bad injector from the bone yard going to send all four to have them checked and cleaned.didn't think to swap # 2 injector for another one what do you think thank for the info.doug_9

98 1.6L 5sp ,16Valve MPI.

compression test ok
spark ok
All NOID'S hitting. Great ECU is good.
#2 has issues. (injector )

before swapping an injector, measure the coil resistance, it must be near 12 ohms
and it should be close in value to the the others. )
Some times (rare) just one turn on a coil inside can short(make it a weak injector) and then measures a tad low . Shades of gray can be NO FUN.

after that you can listen to it. (any rubber tube to ear and side of injector, hear click click,) stethocope is best.

should sound like the others too, if it sounds funny, IT IS.

then swap it.
see if problem follows the injector.
IF injector bad does not move to new cylinder then , something wrong with #2 cylinder.
or the #2 injector driver might be weak (it might flash but sometimes rarely they are weak , NOIDS are great but are 90%or more,... correct not 100%)

last, would be Fuel pressure tests.
may be the pressure is low and the injector is a tad dirtier thant the others.
combined. All injectors cleaned and test and flow charted.is $80.

there is the little story in the ASE MM , chapter on this.
man did all the above and car passed every test , even scoping injectors.
problem was a bad cam lob, one valve only opened a tiny bit, just enough to pass the compresson test ,but make cylinder only have 10% power.
course the the others cylinders had to drag this one around.

in life there can be surprise like this. I hope its just one bad injector and you can find a used spare cheap.
don't forget the injector shop can fix most. (not bad coil) but they have ultrasonic tank that can beak up gunk inside ,etc.
Like magic for $18

FYI:
a shop with a scope can look at it and say exactly what it is doing
that injector. A sticking or slugish injector has a classic pattern.
