Default Tranny into '89 Sidekick-and other ???'s

Hi! newbie immediately diving in and asking a question, of course. I have recently bought a '89 Sidekick that I am very pleased with. I have been driving a '93 Tracker for the majority of the summer, but recently got this one, as it has newer and better paint-looks great from about 15' and farther-a lift, big wheels and tires, luggage rack, extra fog and off road lights, etc. Looks like it is REALLY made to be an off-roader! Anyway, prior owner thought the engine was going dead and KNEW the tranny was acting weird, so she gave me a good deal on it, because she is a friend anyway. So, first question, were all '89's 1.3's? Another friend that has one told me this, but I saw a tranny that claimed to be compatible with a 1.6 from '89. How can I find out for sure? Metal ID plate in engine bay is stamped for color only, apparently. This one has a "throttle body" style of fuel injection-no rails- does that help anyone? Main question is, what trannies are straight swaps into this Sidekick? I have done a lot of searching on here, and it seems that the consensus is that all manuals from '89-'96 are the same? This one is a manual with a 5-speed, and is the convertible, short, 2-door model. Even though this tranny is about to croak, I got this one thinking I could even cannibalize my other one for arts if necessary, but after driving it a little bit, and doing a compression test, I don't think the engine is bad. Input? Compression checked at right around 95 lbs on all four cylinders. I was not sure what a "good" reading would be, but usually consider that if all of them are similar, it is likely okay. So any input on this would be helpful. I have found a '94 4-door Sidekick in a local junkyard with full engine and tranny that are supposed to be working, so was wondering, and trying to confirm before purchase, if this transmission should fit in mine. Any weird alterations I should watch out for? What about that engine? If I can get EVERYTHING that goes with it (all the computer and vacuum items that are different), is it a very straight-forward swap? Thinking that if I can save the current '89 engine, might go ahead and get the junkyard engine also, just for future emergencies. Lastly, could the thing be running weakly due to altitude? She brought it from Prescoot, AZ, I believe, which I think is at about 5000 feet. I am now in Taos, NM, which is at about 7000 feet? Should this make a diff, and if so, how do I adjust the fuel injection to correct this?

Thanks for any and all help and suggestions!

Michael
