hubs , locking 4wd
if the spring is gone, yes, they just rust a way to nothing.
that is called END OF LIFE for locking hub.s , they will never work broken.
buy a new set of WARN hubs.
or used, or beg here. or ???

these bad hubs will wreck summer MPG.
or any time you are not driving on snow or ice.
and can be dangerous if one side locks and the other dont (steering tricks) not safe.

cheers.

yes we remove 4x4 hub to remove locker that make axle spin tire so now it 2wd but several time I wish I have 4wd but I just push geo out soft yard myself. Good thing it was not 5,000 pounds sunk in yard.

We need find online store that sell hub I try find and mostly for auto hub but no manual hub.

well went to all auto store There are no 70w90 expect mobil 1 75w90 but I want 70w90 so I could get little better mpg.

I been watch how it shift. Outside in Michigan in morning it almost 20oF it kind grind lot when you try start and drive. IF I put in neutral and let idle for 5 min then it shift great. But when it was 50oF it little grind after few miles it start loose.

I believe it have 80w90 GL4 GL5.

No black color when I change oil. it more brown. It look like 1 1/2 quarts come out.

I need help with engine light problem. I try with scanner it useless for this. I been get 22 mpg out 9 gal for 200 miles. I need replace ERG valve too.

MKE,

My local boneyard has two 4WD Geo Trackers with Automatic transmissions
with manual hubs (1995 & 1996).

If you want, I can pull (or have pulled) the hubs for you and mail them
to you. I think the last time I asked, the boneyard man said $10 each
(plus mailing).

JTGH!
Do you know if these years of hubs will work in his older Tracker?

If you're tranny is bad or clutch I would worry about that first but having bad hubs is also a bad thing... playing with life or death at 60mph.

I would first fix the tranny/clutch before the hubs -- but yes if they are bad replacing should fix the 4x4 unless you have another underlying problem! Check the transfercase fluid!

Place this in your comment if you want help: YEAR, MAKE, MODEL, ENGINE, TRANS, MILEAGE, AUTO/MANUAL HUB(if 4x4)

testing 4wd action

first find real problem then replace bad parts, guessing will be very costly.

the hubs can be bad ,either side. or both
can be locked and not unlock and be open and not clocked when you want it.

as cody said, why risk life at 60-70mph ?
when all it takes is a simple checks.
plus:
if you here them click as you drive remove them they are dangerous when in that state.
those the balance off the car. !!! take off the lockers and drive with out them.
it is 7.5K mile inspection point the no one ever does..... sigh.

4wd is cool but requires extra maintenance.

one can after testing the hubs.
then rotate the front wheels locked with tranny (xfr) in neutral.
and try to feel for loseness in the CV's , popping , clicking, etc.
one can use 2 hands.
one on left side of cv other hand on other side, then work hands against each other (car jacked up)
and see the play in the CV.
tiny, ok, little to lot bad. ( try on new car to see diff)

IFS can last a long time on PART time cars. ( its disconnected most of the time)
but with lift kits , no.

transfer case is fine. No black oil just brown.

Been drive all days. transmission seem it get better no more grind it due to outside was 63oF

For hub we already know it bad because it chew spring and cause thingy lock to cv axle to wheel and stay spin until you notice why you get worst mpg.

I check cv axle it was lock in 4wd so remove hub's thingy so it spin but not great if you stuck and couldn't use 4wd because bad hub.

cv axle we check no play it good. It have 90,000 miles on it plus it been sit for few years.

JTGH,

The '97 Tracker (4 door, 16v, Auto) at the boneyard is scheduled for the crusher...
(any day now).

Do you know if its manual hubs will work on Milwaukee's older
Tracker? If so, I'll see if I can get them pulled before it is too late.

I recall you once posted a diagram of the hub parts.
