no, 1.8 is us unique and a nice motor.
just give it lots of clean oil.

the 1.8 is DOHC, the 1.6 is SOHC
the 1.8 has the oil cap front.
the 1.6 has it to the rear.

many many things are diff on a 1.8L sport.

if you dont know shoot it with a cell cam and post it.

yep, that means i got the 1.6 .
got it in the shop having transmission fluid, oil change and the 4wd cases lubed.
i just got the tracker a few days ago and want to do what the PO probably didn't.

only other issues is the window cranks hard and kind of wiggle around too much. i'm afraid they might end up going off track.
then underneath there is this round pipe going perpendicular to and welded to the frame just behind the rear wheels. i think it has some electic wires and or hoses going through it. looks like the gas tank might fasten to it as well maybe. not sure what it's called. it's rusted bad. looks like i need a fix for that though.
i'll send pics when she come back from the shop.
oh i sent of for a 1996 geo tracker owner's manual on a cd off of ebay. cheap about $4.
well anyway that pipe is rusted bad.
thanks much for the info.

so my mechanic tells me the catalytic converter is the source of my noise. essentially stuff inside the converter rattling around. if i were to replace the converter the cost would be nearly one third what i paid for the tracker.
my mechanic tells me that theoretically one could take a straight pipe and do with out the converter but he couldn't do it as a licensed mechanic and shop.
so i'm wondering if one was to work around the converter with a straight pipe would that involve performance issues with how the car is tuned to work with the converter?
in other words would trying to do that open up a whole new can of squirrles.

that book you got is the glove box ops guide. a good deal.

you have a 96 and is 1.6L but what country?, was the car built for.
If for the N.American cont. there is a a white smog sensor under the hood (look up)
on next to radiator bracket top.
this label , typically has the vacuum map , USA law reqirement.
E3= usa fed49
e33 usa calif
e28 canada
e60 Puerto Rico

but , .... if your car has OBD2 type ECU? , then it will be really unhappy with
the "test pipe" it will throw code P0420 (or close,or worse)
the cat has many monitors , that run full time.
some cars evoke limits on power and economy if you have certain DTC set.
I dont think? your does that.

some have some success using the rear O2 sensor , extender. (stand off hollow nut)

a generic (and legal) cat can be had for $59 to $99 . Catco is on brand.

cheers

finally got the engine pics.
also took some pics of that pipe under the frame that is rusting out. sorry they are such poor pics. the pipe goes perpendicular to the frame just behind the rear wheels, it has wires going through it and looks like fuel tank is hooked up to it. what's that pipe called? and since it's rusted so bad what can i do about it?
oh, and the owners manual cd off of ebay turned out good.

1.6L sidedraft Throttle body.
these cars have seperate body and frame.
that pipe is structual, it must be repaired. Lateral brace. it is part of the Frame.
look at what connects to this pipe. those things connected will fail.
Bad CAT.
CATcon breakup , the monolithic element is a Brick like object. it can break up.
then you get code P0420 (or close) DTC error codes on the scan tool.
this is very common.

the rear pipe has a body mount to it.
kinda important.

you didnt say 2door or 4 door , as both frame are different.

Default frame shots

here is your frame

the pipe you have problem with is next to the shock absorbers.

on a 2 door , counting pipes from rear to front.
pipe 2 ,yours!, holds up the gas tank. if fail , out drops gas tank.
Ford Pinto like,

pipe 3 , holds the rear axle from falling out.

this reminds of the the old song , the leg bone connected to the hip bone...the...

lol

photo is 2 door ,canvas top.
