Smile '91 Kicker Transfer case Seal

Hello Folks

I recently purchased a '91 Sidekick 4dr, 5 speed manual 4wd manual hubs with the 8v 4cly engine. My Kicker has somewhere between 100k and 180k and it runs real good! Not to sure about the mileage be cause it was towed behind a motorhome.

This forum has been very helpfull and I appreciate the advise I have seen especially from JTGH. I found the information regarding the distributor oil leak very helpfull and the pictures were awesome. Mine was leaking and I ordered the o-rings and fixed it in about an hour !!!

I have noticed oil in the driveway and it appeared to be coming from the transfer case. I just cleaned it off and will check it again later to get a better idea of the exact location. Anyway, I suspect that it may be the seal where the front driveshaft goes into the transfer case. If so is this hard to replace?

Welcome aboard! And I concur about the members of this forum, in fact I think we found it the same way, lol.
As for the leak and changing the seal, I'll wait to find out with you one that one.

That transfer case seal is easy to replace. The front and rear output shafts seals of the transfer case are the same. I got mine from NAPA, they were not very expensive.

I drained the transfer case, dropped both drive shafts (mark the positioning) from the axles, removed both seals, installed new seals, and re-installed the drive shafts, and filled the transfer case with new oil.

All this took only about 1 1/2 hours, including clean up. Easy job to do. Good luck

good liner , from hialtitde.

the middle case is dry, but.... it has this thing drain hole (a slot really) on the bottom.
clean that and watch that.
there are 2 seals in side , xfr front, and tranny rear, thus the dry mid, case.

but the prop shaft seals are piece of cake , city.

you hate leak too, like me.
cheers.

Cool !! I will probably get to it this weekend. One other question, what do you mark in the driveshafts and why?

Yep, that was easy. Had it done last weekend but was waiting for accel. cable before test driving. Both fixed and leak is gone.
