hello all,

I have a vitara jlx 1991 / 1600cm engine / 82cp / petrol.
I love this old car for outdoors and offroad

mechanical situation of this car is good, any bad parts was replaced.

I have only one question for you: Urban petrol consum is aprox. 11-12 litres / 100km, is it normal for this car and if is not, where could be the problem?

i have a skoda octavia car / 1997 year / 1.9tdi and used in the same way consume max 7 litres / 100km

19.6mpg (us gallon) is really bad. I get 25mpg worse case, slow driving.
unless driving dead slow in snow. (sand dunes?)
You get same MPG as my 4600lb. chev truck ! sold it.

other wise bad.

2wd or 4wd?, if 4wd are your hubs unlocking? (autos bad, or manuals set wrong)

is the check engine lamp on key on, then goes out after starting?
if the problem is in the engine /EFI and not because of right foot,
it can be any of the following:
1: high fuel pressure, do to bad Fuel pressure regulator.
2: engine not reaching 180 (82C) to 200 deg. F.
3: ECT is bad and does not show coolant at 180 but 140 , and stays rich all the time)
4: IAT bad, same reason as 3, but this time AIR.
5: bad map sensor ( rare as hens teeth)
6: ECU bad, put in a fresh set of capacitors , per my link (SIG)
7: Bad Oxy sensor. (car will run rich with it bad ,usually)

I will test this things, and I will post results

Here in romania, until last year, we can not register this cars, buyed from another countries (germany in my casel) becouse the taxes was very high for old cars.
This is the reasons why, here we do not have specialists for this type of motors,
without computer diagnosis.

first make sure engine coolant hits 180F (82c) that is the first test.
do not throw parts, [please, blush)
do you have a volt meter, dmm , dvm, any meter?

we can take some easy tests.
all it takes is meter and a sewing needle. best is to have carpet or leather sewing needle.
for back probing. pros use needle test probes. (Pomona Elect./Fluke, sells them here)

after that it can run perfect.

My job is in electronics and computers service, so I have tools to make tests.
Friday I will change air and petrol filters becouse are olds and after that, in weekend, i will make some tests. First of all I will read informations from your site.

dear sir,

Until last days I can not work at my car.
Now I buy with 100 dollars all fuel injection sistem from a disabled car.
Now I have all sensors, another injector so I can make tests.

So, I have tools, parts to change, I will make some tests.
Except a clicking noise from engine, not from injection sistem, the car is working well, except the big fuel comsumed.

Another 4 of my friends buy now the same cars, so we have a small team here, five vitara and one samurai
