Default Replacing Brake Line - Need Help

Hello,

First things first..it is my first post so....

I've got a 94 Tracker 2dr 4X4 5 spd

I have to replace the steel brake line (Hooray for Canadian rust) that goes from the front to the rear brakes. I have noticed that it is clipped to the frame of the truck with a few black plastic clips that also hold the feul line (I think). Does anyone know how to remove these clips? or do they have to be broken off and then replaced.

Thanks.

Where abouts in Canada are you from? Good to see a few other canucks here! Your best bet is to go to a pressure washer (providing it's still safe to drive) and wash off the debris under the body- you'll be surprised at what you find, lol.

The clips should open up if I remember them correctly. JTGH should be around shortly, one of the best for info along with quite a few others I have had the pleasure to meet on here.

After the repair, get the vehicle undercoated for the winters.

It's time consuming but each pair of 'ears' surrounding each line can be opened enough to pry the retainer away from the frame. Usually age and the elements has made them brittle. Rust reduces the cross section of the lines, weakening them. Take care not to move them too much when removing the retainer or you might wind up replacing more than one line. They are cheap- probably nearly as much effort to get them off to re-use as to cut the segment between each line w/ a single edge razor blade.

Thanks for the info.

Hi MOD,

I am in Cambridge Ontario

I bought this truck in the summer and the previous owner had been getting it undercoated every year...but they stopped about 4 years ago. I plan on getting it done again this year after the repair. The rest of the underbody looks pretty good.

Hi Flying Scotsman,

These clips are now so brittle that they will snap with the slightest bit of pressure. Since there are 4 lines running and I only need to change the top one I am thinking of just cutting loose the top line and finding a new way to secure the replacement lline to the frame. That way I will also avoid putting to much strain on the other lines.

I'm from Barrie, lol. Only a few hours away. Pretty neat how close we all are.

buy the special flare tool for brakes.
buy the tubing, bend it your self with spring bender tools .
it is specail tubing rated for brakes and has a special flare bend.
do not use pumbing tools.
as an alternate, upgrade to SST. (stainless steel)

or get a used one at the wreckers ( << not smart as it is rusty too and it is after all brakes)
