That is good question.
it is just a mechanical device, levers, shafts ,pins and springs.
what exactly happened? , will tell you what when wrong by examining the parts that failed.
if the cable end fails. (cable actually snaps top side?)
it can break off the cable ( this happens for 5 reasons)
1 cheap china made cable. ( try OEM cables , they are much better)
2 end of life. ( went 100k or more and broke)
3 the clutch has a problem , eg: main pilot shaft is galled and disc is jamming !
( this evokes the classic irresistible force against the immovable object, )
4: someone didn't lube it as the service schedule asks. (grease the shackle pin)
5: the cables sheath is damaged and allowed water ingress and rust and caused the seizing of the cable , then your left foot over came this condition and snapped the cable. ( same forces explained in #3)
600 lbs of force (or more) you can make with your LEFT foot and 6:1 ratio linkage.
There can be other failure modes.
including driving on salted roads and beaches and getting this water up into the cable..
next is the pin breaks on the end shackle.
if this pin breaks, then again, the same 5+ possible reasons.
use a quality cable and lube it , and it might last.
if it does not, then you have a real clutch problem, it is jamming.
the clutch disc must slide freely on the pilot shaft of the transmission.
if it can not, you have a problem.
hope that helps.
