Default Adjusting Clutch

I just purchased a 95 Tracker with a 5 speed. When its cold and for about a dozen or so shifts, I can feel 2nd gear teeth catch between first and second. Once the gears and engine are warmed up, it seems to transition just fine.

So, my question is, how can I adjust the clutch to reduce or eliminate the "catching"?

Thanks

Do I need to use any "cleaners" before I drain the oil? I think I recall seeing a oil plug at the bottom of the tranny. Once drained, where do I fill it from and do I fill it to capacity?

Thanks for the insight, its very helpful.

you need the correct gear box lube.
the side level plug and the bottom plug are glued in at the factory.
after all these years ,it gets tuff as nails, heating it with a propane torch to just barely too hot to touch then crack them both loose. 150deg F, "Hot tub + 50 i say."
if you cant loosen both plugs ,do not change the lube. Get help.

the side plug is a level and fill plug, you just fill it , till it starts dribbing out.
the hand pumps are slow as heck.
id recommend have someone do it.
if fill mine, by cheating. i had the console remove and filled it from the top but that requires the top extention housing removed. you dont want to do that.
sadly you can not fill tranny from gear shift socket hole.

no cleaners can work, it would just run in and run out.
and you dont want to drive with cleaners in any gear case. [ non i know about]

I think a shop only charges $20 for a lube on a gear box + lube price.

I had the oil in the tranny changed... it still "grinds" between first and second until it gets warmed up. The guy who changed the oil said the oil that came out was really wattery. Any suggestions?

When I did on 93 geo tracker

We change it look brown color it was first time it have 90,000 miles.

Then we put 80w90 gear oil costal

now it hard get in 1 or 2 or R gear if you let clutch then hit it shift ok.

i was like worry think it wrong oil we follow manual book say 80w90 oil.

What I should do? I need this to be reliable before go to Alpena from Toledo that are 4 hours of drive for 300 miles.

what GL# lube did you buy.

axle lube or gear lube they are diff.?

transmission and xfr case is GL4, 75w80-75w-90 all temp.

80w-90 GL4 is rated only for above -20C or -4F temperatures.
now axles
are GL5. same visc. rules and temp.

this is out of the 95 glove box guide.

do you have clutch pedal free play of 1/2 inch?

so many cross posts.
no not halfe way, ONE HALF INCH PLAY or 10-12mm . at the pedal.

next post:
watery oil means some one put ATF oil in it, or engine oil the mech should smell it and proclaim what it was.
or some radical thin synthetic

next post :
no you didn't hurt it. in fact it may last for ever now . if you can stop the grind.

usually thick lube only makes you shift slower , when cold after tranny warm up , you cant go fast.
please explain better what you mean. 3 to 2 ok and only 1 to 2 bad?
already answered above how to fill it, till it dribbles the side level check hole.

3.2 pt (1.5 liter) pt = pint or about 1.6 quarts

now back to still grand between 1 and second , if only 2nd grinds that means
the synco is worn, but that should get worse warm. but that varies by tranny design. I suppose.

if you are sure it is GL4 (that is a gear lube class) and AZ dont have a spec for there lube online. GL5 is hypoid gear oil and is not to be used in a tranny.
now GL5 oil has an additive in it (for the Hypoid rear and front axles) that can eat the brass alloy syncros.

so the manual says, use GL4 , i recommend using that.
also somebody might have put some synthetic fluid in it and this might take 3000 miles
to work out of the gears.
how cold are the gears.
I must say there are people running synthetic oil and are happy with shifting.
how cold is cold 50F or 0F?

I have the seeking suspicion that the autozone oil is ok. and that the GL5 is modified
to not hurt the syncro's. and that you need to either

1 fix clutch ( i dont think so)
2 or wait for the old crap to run out or dissipate.
3: or try some diff lube that will love your bad 2nd gear syncro.

but dang it works hot, huh?

if driven many a car with a bad 2nd synco, it gets the most abuse.
dont down shift to 2nd , and dont wind out 1st gear. shift sooner and
learn the age old practice called double clutch ( trucks used to have no syncros, grin)

but if that is the case, then oil brand type and weight might hellp.

the manual says highly recommend the;
SAE 75W-90
and you might try the synth. version.
beats pulling it.
