Default 90 Tracker Firing on Two Cylinders Only

Hi - I live in Australia and the Tracker is called a Vitara here. I have a manual 1990 two door 1.6l carby model. I had a cracked block and have just replaced my old G16A engine with a recond G16B motor but the new motor is only running on two cylinders. There is only a weak spark to cylinders 3 & 4 and you can smell the unburnt petrol. Have tried to adjust the distributor but with no luck. Also there is a popping sound from to air intake hose which stops when I put my finger over it (and the revs pick up). I am a bit new to all this so please bear with me - can anyone help please?

what is new engine.

did you compression test that new motor.

new cap, rotor, wires, plugs will give spark to all 4. guaranteed.

but it sounds like you have leaking valves.

what hose.?

Default No compression in C4

Hi - Thanks for your reply. We just did a compression test and there is no compression in cylinder 4. Have read the manual again and have found a UK supplement in the back section which states that the 997cc motor in the UK needs to have the timing 180drgrees out. Have you heard that? Maybe so does mine I wonder? My dad said that we may have put a hole in the cylinder head with the valve if we have done it 180 out. Does that sound feasible? That would not be good obv - feeling a bit sick in the stomach at the moment!!

Default Motor & Hose

Hi - The new motor is a recond G16B block with a G16A recond 8 valve head on it. Do you use those model numbers in the US? The hose plugs into the bottom of the air filter and has an orange placi bit on it and sucks air. That sound a bit vauge sorry but the manual is still at my dads - I will get the correct name tomorrow if that would help.

ok, the 8v and 16 v have to opposite direction rotating distributors, dizzys.
see my ign timing page for that , click my signature. link.

but that has no effect on , compression, only the pistons, valve and the valve timing.
if valve timing is perfect , then you have a leak in #4.

you can remove the dizzy and the compression would not be effected , its just an air pump.

id forget the hose thing for now, and get 150 psi on all 4 or, more.
cheers.

hope its something easy, like a gasket or..

Default 180 degrees out on timing

Thanks for your resposes. We pulled the head off again and found the intake valve was bent on cyl 4 and not sealing. We have been using a Haynes Manual and think that we have found an error in it. The timing setting are 180 degrees out. We bent the valve when we turned the motor over after setting the timing at the manual specs. We rotated the timing 180 deg after putting in new valves and it runs like a charm now. Thank goodness if was a cheap fix! Have you heard of this before?

I'd get rid of the Haynes manual and get a FSM. Enjoy your car.

ooohhh
a 16valve head.

we call it a 16v , in the fsm its called that and in the parts list its called a 4valve
4 per cylinder. the Geo calles it a VIN U or a VIN 6 ( vin 6 = 16valves)
it also says, if timing gets (cam) off more then 90 degress , good bye valves.

interference engine it is , despite the rumors.

for others readin, this:
if its 16v , always (if you hear funny sounds or loss of power)

check the cam timing.
first thing, before all.

92-2008 in USA. all kicks all trackers. (or chev, vitrara's)

cheers.
