Question heater core replacement

I have a 1990 1.6L automatic 4wd 2 door hardtop tracker, winter is approaching and I have no heat in the car which I spend at least 50% of my time a day in the car. Heat will be essential and I have noticed that the heater core has been bypassed. I am wondering how difficult it would be to get the heat working in the car. It does have factory AC and it works great. I am making the assumption that there was a problem with the heater core so the previous owner just bypassed it altogether. How long will this job take? Does the entire dash have to come out in order to access the heater core? Really want to know if this is something I should leave to the professionals. Granted I am not afraid to turn a wrench by any means. Any info would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

i just posted and it deleted, ggggggrrrrr

ok.
you can do a pressure leak down test.
this car is not hard to work on , or pull that core, compared to most cars.

or
drain block, rad, and flush it clean of all antifreeze.
install new heater hoses.
button it all up , fill with only water.
now drive it 5 miles, go home.
let idle and get good and hot. and watch that heater unit for leaks or floor.
it jus tmight be good and PO was too cheap to replace bad hoses.

then if it dont leak drain water , add antifreeze and you are good.
notice you didnt get antifreeze crap on floor , which is MO better .

PS: make sure heater hot cold lever moves, then look at rear bell crank on left side back of heater box. It must move exactly the same amount , end to end. and
you must hear it go CLUNK.
this core is always hot and the door either blocks the core or bypasses it.
so if it is stuck in closed ,no heat.
but your hose are missing, but i just wanted to say that incase your PO was really fooling up everything in this car.

ok ,
will look for , my post of blow up posted last week, next post.

when i get home i will look at the removal inst. in my 91 FSM.
see if there are any surprise horrors.

i just looked there are 12 steps , and not hard ones , like removing the steering wheel like on sammi.

Hi,
had to divert attention to other issues with the tracker, I have purchased a new heater core and ready to tackle the project. The FSM page that you had posted is not there wondering if you could post again. Also I saw where the steering wheel has to be removed. That seems to be a little more than I have tackled before but I am willing to try. Does the entire dash and center console have to come out on this job? I guess there is no way to get there without removing the steering wheel and dash. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
