Cool White/blue smoke

Hi, I new here. My name is Mark Thompson. Normally I work on old '60's
chevys. I got turned on to the "Zuki" by my girlfriend. I like it. It seems to
be a tough little SUV.
Recent Problem: I just changed the oil & replaced with Quaker State 10W-30 Wt. A few days later it seems to smoke @ start-up. Once it warms up
it goes away. 2nd problem (existing) It has a tough time shifting from 1-2.
After it finally does - then there is no problem the rest of the time you drive.
I suspect that the Trans vacuum modulator needs replaced - this may also
cause the recent smoking issue since it's been cooler ??

Any Ideas?

Thanks,
Mark. (markt515@hotmail.com)

sure sounds like it.

just drop the vac tube at the tranny at mod valve.
if it drips pink juice, yup

then do a vacuum leak down test on the diaphragm, pass fail.
do you have a vacuum brake bleeder, same tool.

cheers

Cool Mark Thompson- White/blue smoke issue...

Hey,
Thanks for the reply! I pulled hose off end of modulator & red fluid really
came out! Alot! Looks like I will have to drop the driveshaft. Do you have to
drain the Tansfer case before you pull the driveshaft to keep fluid from
gushing out? This is an '89 1.6 ltr SOHC JLX by the way.
What weight of oil goes back in Transfer case? 75/90 wt. ?

Thanks for your help!
-Mark

yes it will gush out.

is this the 3sp.
here are the manuals.
so you dont have work blind.
there are 2 types of manuals for both 3sp and 4sp
full fsm and the trouble books

Slush pump diagnosis

GL4 tranny/xfr GL5 in axles ,the lube, weight as per manual.
see last 3 links on above page for modulator, a common fail.

Cool White/Blue smoke! - Mark Thompson

Thanks for the Manual Information! This is awesome!
I got the tool J-23100 from Suzuki & new Modulator.
I got the Zuki up in the air & dropped the Front
Driveshaft to gain access to Modulator. I got on it w/the
tool & even added the Jack hanle to get leverage on this!
It still wouldn't come out!
Would any one know if this a counter clockwise or
clockwise motion needed on this? I looked @ threads on
the new one & it looks as though it's Clockwise. I don't
really want to destroy the old one trying to get it off as
this is every day transportation!

Thanks for all the help!

just look at the new one.

im sure its not LH, but

stick finger nail in the last 2 threads.

the turn unit, ccw, with finger nail in groove, CCW=counter clock wise, or AntiClock wise for AZ/UK
if finger falls off end,the thread is normal.

but do check, as you don't want to risk car.
try heating the area around it with a torch like nor more than hot tub , then as it cools
spry LPS/wd40,etc, penetrating oil it.
this creates a vacuum in the thread and can suck in some oil.
then it can come out easier (dark science tricks, hehehehe)

for others, if you need a wrench , many just grind down a cheap HARbor Frieght set.
whole set for $8 and afterthat , you get 8 free wrenches, and 1 funny one. hahahahah
it is good to know suzi still sells that wrench.

happy trails.

My 97 has puff of white bluish smoke when I start it up and after about 5-10 seconds the smoke is gone. Do i have same problem or is it that I am just burning oil or anti-freeze?

Thanks,
M

the valve seals when old get worn and hard.
after parking hot , the thin oil leaks past the seals to top of valve.
then when started it burns off.
most people just ignore it.

if worried the you are sucking tranny oil.
just crawl under, and disconnect the vac. line to the vac, modulator.
see if red ATF (dextron) leaks out.
if not you are ok (either nipple or hose ,)
just be sure to not let vacuum get loose or free energy will kill everone << joke. LOL.

cheers.

At first I thought it was bad Valve Guide seals too- till I found all of the Tranny fluid
coming out of the Vacuum Modulator. My 1.6 has 161,000 on it and I Top-oil it
every once and while. Also, w/Oil change I have always put 1 quart of Rislone in.
I have 1 Vehicle w/ a 350 chevy motor in it that I have driven 329,000 & it still runs
strong! Rislone is a High refined fish oil that gets into tolerances that normal oil won't.
I'll swear by it!
