I just bought a 93 Tracker 2dr/2wd convertible for my daughter. The problem is it didn't come with an owners manual and the shop manual I downloaded doesn't have the info I'm looking for. I've got a Jeep Wrangler with a soft top so I thought I'd be able to figure out the Tracker, but so far I'm not doing it right. The top is trashed and I've ordered a new one. What I need is
1) How does the top normally operate? i.e. Tab A into Slot B
2) Any advice on replacing the top?
First, make sure you have no other plans for the day, as that will be about how long it takes to take the top off, and fold it away. To say nothing about putting it back on. Pray you don't get caught in the rain, as you'll never be able to get the top back on without getting drenched. Frankly, I don't even hassle with removing it anymore. I just use the sunroof part - easy enough, open the clips, and fold it back. And easy to close up again quickly. With window frames and the roll bar, even with the top completely off, it doesn't feel much different than just opening the sunroof - it doesn't feel like a real open air rag top. However, we all must learn from our own experience, so hopefully I remember this all...Now, my car is a 1991 - presumably the 93 is the same. Here goes:
You unclip the 2 clips on the windshield frame by the sun visors, and push the top partly up. You then have to remove the canvas (that you have pushed up) from the frame, by pushing forward on the clips on the front of canvas top that holds it to the front frame. This frees the front part of the top. By the interior light, there is a snap. Undo it. Then, go into the back seat of the car. At the two back windows there are snaps around the frame there. Undo them. Then push outward on the bottom by the rear windows. There is a bar there on each side that snaps back into the car (when you are putting the top back - you are now 'unsnapping' this bar.) The canvas 'folds' around this bar that you are pushing out. Move the canvas away from the bar. Unsnap the back of the top from the back frame. Unzip the rear window. The top should now be free from the frame. Enjoy folding the top up. Push the rear frame down to the tailgate and snap down. Snap the two front clips by the visors to hold the front frame back in place. Pray that it doesn't rain for the rest of the day, and enjoy.....That's all from memory as I don't bother with this anymore...I just use the sunroof.
It's about 10 minutes down and mine straps behind the seats nicely (see signature avatar) and 15 minutes up. Nothing you can do at a stop light. After a few times, you'll find the best sequence for yourself. Example, I start the side window zippers 1st before fitting them into place. It is also much easier to put the top up when it's very warm and the material is expanded.

Drives like a grandpa due to oil prices...
I don't remove or even unzip my rear window, I let that fall intio the cargo area, than I gently fold the side windows half way & put then in front of the rear window, than I roll the top tightly & neatly & put it in the cargo area, the side windows stick out a little bit on each side, it looks nice when it's folded tight like that, almost like a cover boot.
Every time I put the top up I find it gets easier, I have a routine now, the hardest part for me, not so much anymore was getting the rear posts to stay in place when closing the top, I find that once you get the front part clipped in its best to stretch it out & insert the posts & rear window into the frame that way.
It takes me about 10 to 15 minutes to put the top up, depending how good i'm feeling that day.
