Default Another Crankshaft Seal Question

OK, I have now ruined 4 seals... almost $50 so far! One FKS Taiwanese part from Pep Boys, and 3 OEM Japanese seals.. the last one I put in the freezer overnight to shrink it as much as possible. In the FSM, the only reference to crankshaft seal replacement is in the section about oil pump removal. The manual shows replacing the seal after the pump is removed. I have been working on the seal that is right on the oil pump when the timing gear is removed from the crank shaft. Does a Tracker (97 1.6 16V) have two crank shaft seals, or is the one I am working on part of the oil pump and not supposed to be replaced and I have to pull the pump off? I can't believe how difficult this is. Any input from folks who've done this job would be greatly appreciated.

What sort of technique are you using to put the seal in? If you've chernobyled 4 of them i'm tipping you're doing it wrong.

Are you talking about the front seal behind the crank pulley bout 1"- 1 .5" big?

As long as you're sure you've got the right part, put some silicon on the outer edge, then lightly push it in. It may require some encouragement with a soft blow hammer but not so much force as to damage it.

Deardsy- Yes, right behind the pully. The OEMs are brown, and the aftermarket one was black. It's so tight that it doesn't really mate up. When I changed the seal in my Miata, it was tight, but it was possible to get it started by hand... straight in. This one has to be tilted a slight bit to get it started, otherwise it just bounces off the outside edge. I made a pusher tool from PVC pipe with larger sleeve glued on, then sanded smooth and straight on. Perhaps the seal that goes behind the pump is a different part, and that's what I've been getting? I don't get why the seal is sized as to not be able to even get it started.

How does the new seal look in size compared to the old seal? I don't even know if this is possible, but could like the outer ring of the old seal still be in there? Tracka96

The whole seal came out, and it's all clean surfaces. I have only eyeballed the old/new seals. I think that I'll use to old caliper to measure them and the hole they go into.
