Default 2002 Tracker ZR2 4x4 - timing chain job

Hello all,

Yes, I am a noob here, but could really use some help.

My fiance's 2002 Chevy Tracker ZR2 4x4 threw it's upper timing chain, and I've started the adventure of making the repair myself. Belts, fan, tensioner, idler, a/c compressor, valve cover, are all off. The upper chain guide and chain is broken off, and under the cam sprockets behind the front cover. Couple teeth are broken off the cam sprockets too.

Unfortunately, I've hit a roadblock, that seems so simple, but is really frustrating me. The water pump pulley is in the way of one of the timing cover bolts, and even though I've removed the 4 bolts pulley, I can't get the pulley off. There is a rusty cap/cover on the front of the water pump pulley that's preventing me from using a 2/3 jaw puller to pull the water pump pulley off. I've also tried removing the whole water pump, to no avail (seems to be attached somewhere I can't see or behind the timing cover)

How do I get the pulley off, or at least the rusty cap/cover? (not in the Haynes manual I'm looking at)

Also, since this is a 4wd, I have not dropped the oil pan, as recommended in the manual and/or online instructions for this job. Do I really need to drop the whole pan, or can I just get away with removing the front oil pan bolts?

Thanks in advance

Sean

your 4 year over the wall .
but i will try to wing it.
but that car came with 2 engines, and both have chains. 420, or 625
so i give up.

but a gentle smack will take off that pulley, photo on 4cyl , looks like it just pops off after the bolts are out. and shows that , exploded view.

ill look up the pan issues.

Thanks very much for the help and PM JTGH. I greatly appreciate it. The car is a 2.0L 4cyl, I guess it would have helped to mention that.

After I figured out what 4 years over the wall meant, (bit slow tonight) I do realize the year didn't fit the 1989-1998 range, but didn't see another place to post this question. I definitely don't want to be "THAT" guy, so please point me in the right direction. Is there not enough demand for the 1999+ Sidekicks and Trackers to get their own forum? I guess I should have been in the "Other Suzuki Models Forum"?

I guess I know what I'm doing tommorrow. I want to get some pics of the carnage, to post if anyone is interested. But like I said, maybe for another/different forum...

4cyl, says no pan drop, i think, see pdf.

going back be very easy on the bolts going into aluminum. 5-7 ft/lbs is common.

Thanks again!

I'll be starting a new thread in the proper forum, but below is a pic of the carnage found, once the water pump pulley, and front cover were off.
