Default Brake light stays on

1991 1.6l 4wd 3speed auto, 8valve tracker.

It probably is an ABS brake failure warning or something. When I pull up the emergency brake the light gets brighter, release the emergency brake and the dimly lit brake light stays on.

My question, what things will cause this light to come on? The brakes seem to work fine. Brake fluid level is fine. No strange noises when braking.

1991 cars don't have ABS (that year)...

Your hand-brake (emergency brake) switch is broken or needs re-adjusting.

Remove the console and pull the switch and wire a test.

Thank you! I will check for a switch in the console and post the results.

My '91 does the same thing. A guy at work told me that it has to have a resistor if it is wired to be a tow vehicle. I haven't checked mine to see if that is the problem yet. I don't even know if it is true. Somebody here will know if that is right. Good luck.

nah,
see my blink page on brake light.

the lamp has 4 funcitions.

brake lamp stuck on or flashing

1: hand brack on , or stuck or shorted switch.
2: brake fluid level , ditto, ditto
3: brake diff. pressure sensor shows failure of front or rear (they are not equal pressure)
4: RWAL is unhappy, pull codes per my page. NOT ABS ,its Real Wheel Anti Lock brakes ( NO FRONT !)

it has nothing to with trailer light wiring at all.
unless you have hydralic trailer brakes hooked to your cars hydralic trailer brakes, no , i dont think so.......

I've got a trip to make and just don't have the time right now to trouble shoot the brake light prob. When I find the reason why I'll post.
