Default Switch behind front left speaker

My 92' tracker 1.6L tbi 8 valve has the little switch you can flip on and off, turning your CEL on-off, now when i flash the codes it can only be in one position what the heck does the switch do, and does it just turn off the light when something is wrong avoiding the problem or is it something diff.
I guess what im asking....Am i turning a blind eye to a problem by flipping this switch....and please tell me my geo is not a product of a lazy PO
IS MY LIGHT SUPPOSED TO BE ON, I FLASH CODE 12!!!!!

I believe this is a reset switch. I believe every 50,000 miles the light will come on. It gets you to check your system. Code 12 is normal without system problems.

it doesn't reset anything it just goes on and off , so if i have it off and i reach another 50,000 miles then how is it going to show CEL light

50,000?

Mine triggers at 40,000 (miles) corresponding with maintenance schedule
in the Ornery Manual.

Yea i don't know about the miles, the guy above me said somethin about it, the PO said this thing has had the odom. wrapped around at least a couple of times,(new valve job, block shows no sign of wear so i guess it just stayed in grandpa mode before me)---i've used it for jumping before, but i didn't hurt anything

if you see 000 zeros , its SES,
i was just stating approximates. my link shows the exact, 1 click.

thats USA miles not km.
The SES ( trips at every 50k, 80k& 100k miles) [ NOT ON any REAL Canada market cars ,code E28 ]
found out E03 cars, usa federal 48 export models.
Check Engine Lamp stuck ON?

this is fully documented in the FSM.
and on my page.

keep in mind, some canadians buy usa cars. non e28 , that is true.

it is just a inane mileage nag, it does not cause the ECU to do anything strange.
it is an old legacy function. back when we still had lead in the gas.
remember? that lead kills cats, so every 50k you need to test the car.
no lead , so this feature is useless, cats go for over 100k .

the ecu watches and counts the VSS pulses and then calculates how many miles you have driven. 50k rolls up and it turns on the light.
nothing more, nothing less.

it does not reset anything, is correct.
just slide the switch and the light goes out.

my text link shows the 2 locations that it can be located at:
below kick panel.
and open speaker grill left, look right see it.

they moved it a tad from year to year ,so people can not find it. ( tricky blokes, huh)

I had the light on then moved the switch to turned off, no code or 12. Later I had it on againg and there was no way to turned off with the switch(There was a little difference in the light brighting when moving the switch), so checked the codes, it came to be a O2 sensor, so I think if you have it on in both possitions there must be a code for you otherwise is normal. After changing the sensor it came off with out reseting the ECU.

all you say is 100% normal for SES and CEL and a bad OxY.

the fact is the light bulb is shared, but these ARE two different functions.
and this correcty if both SES and CEL are both active the light is slightly brigher.
and that is correct if the light is on in both directions then SES is set ( who cares its usless ) and the other position is CEL active.

So if you slide the switch , the Light must go out, if not , you have a DTC set in memory.
Diagnostic Trouble Code.
place the jumper and read it out.
on all kicks up to 95 (inclusive) the CEL must come on KEYON no start and go out after starting ( assuming SES is not active) if it dont go out you have a set DTC.
if the light goes out, you have not DTC's, but
but , if you place the jumper, the code 12 must always come out , if there are no DTC's
if you do not get code 12 (normal) the Ecu IS MALFUNCTIONING.
Which is quite common. (mostly due to leaking and dried out capacitors)

If you want the full FSM print out , i can give it to you but it is hard to read.
The FSM has huge flow charts for toubleshooting this ECU.

cheers.

bottom line, CEL must be on at KEy ON, and out after start.
if it stays on , slide the switch over , 1 time.
if the light is on , the you do have a DTC set , go read it.

simple 3 lines ,says all.
