Default idle problem

I have a 96 1.6lL 5speed 4x4 geo, it some times does not want to idle at red lights, You can give it gas and it will pick up rpm, also sometimes it will come back up to 800-900 rpm by its self. what is the best way to clean the iac, I think that is it with the blue wire conector on it beside the throttle body (toward the front of the engine) Has 3 hoses 1 air 2 coolant ? also what is the best way to clean the egr valve, Or any other suggestion on what could be causing this. Thanks for any information.

carb cleaner, picks brushes, what ever it takes.

when it tries to die, dose right foot successfully keep it going , proving loss of air.?
this car is commone for leaking egr, or stick iac.
also is the CEL lamp out running, (and on key on no start)?

you are on right track. no pun.

i presume since car was at a red light it has hot (full engine temP)
most never post how car runs hot or cold, very telling that is.....

ECT (engine coolant temp sensor) .
hot engine:
shorted, sets dtc code
open sets dtc code,
too low , run rich as a pig.
too high , great mpg. (tad lean)

cold engine: ECT:
shorted and open see above.
too low , rich , says -40deg F coolant .again rich as a pig.
too high, lean and runs like a gutless wonder with back fire thru Tb AND CONSTANT BOGGING until hot.

but if car is old and it looks origional, get a new one and save MPG money.
they drift low "rich" with age.
some get bad and try open fails random for DTC ETC high fail.

poster should state how car runs hot and cold.
and idle for both.
and if engine even gets to 180deg. F? cant blame ECT for missing thermostat.
lots of those posted here, missing or stuck wide open stat.

but if only problem is hot idle, then iAC is not working.

if you need the chart it is here.

can be tested so easy.

sorry it taken so long to reply, had a motorcycle vs deer crash. 3 broke ribs, scapula, colapsed lung, pins and screws in my right hand. I cleaned everything it seems to be doing better, but I don't have the check engine lite when I 1st turn on the key. I haven't had a chance to check the bulb yet. Jberry

I am so sorry ,( i ride too) I know what its like, (was hit by a drunk lady once) with cop car behind me ( 4 cops in car).
i broke leg.
easy does it. ok.

yes, check the lamp.

but if lamps is good , the ECU is failing its self test on boot.

bad idle can be caused by many things.

this car has a full OBD2 compliant ECU, it is a waste of time checking sensors the hard way , just rent a full scan tool ( not a simple code reader) and just look.

all the sensors in real time laid out in real time.
if the ECT is off ,you will see it straight away ( i might ?read 140deg? when engine is hot)
so you then do a IR meter look at the thermostat housing. 180 it says.
bingo bad ECT .
Same for the others.
lots of fun doing this, Makes on feel like , Karnack the Magnificate, of Carson fame.
Karnack the Magnificent of Johnny Carson Tonight Show Fame Predicts Hillary's Future - Ernie Els Scoffs at Losers

someone just removed the lamp thinking (wrong) that they can fool the smog man.
folly that is.

I hope you get to eat the deer. small consolation but really feels great doing it.

long legged rats is what they are.

Mend well and my the Guardian Ferry always steer you to safety , always.
cheers ,and bless you.
