Default Exhaust fumes smell Vitara '93

This is sending me nuts!I get a strong exhaust/fuel smell when I drive with the window open.I've checked all the carb pipes, breathers, exhaust flanges, everything seems to be in order.Everything's fine when I close the window, but I'm damned if I'm going to roast this summer!Any ideas?

Nope it's not that.Fuel lines seem fine.Would the carb be at fault? The plugs are their regular colour,so it's not running rich. The smell seems to be worse just after I've filled up for some strange reason, when I get underneath with engine running there are no evident gas leaks.
Driving me nuts.

Cracked exhaust manifold (take the cover off and have someone start engine, you could throw some sand or salt on it to see if it flies off due to your eyes not being able to see the hairline crack)?

you need to say is the smell:

1: smells just like the smell when i put my nose to the gas filler pipe cap off.
or
2: smells like the end of my exhaust pipe. when car is running.

3: or smells like my lawn mower on first start, and makes all the nasty black smoke.

I will guess at exhaust.

your exhaust system has a gross leak.
also the end of the exhaust pipe must be correctly fitted to the exactly point a the rear, just like it came from the factory (mine is in a breezy point out side body)

some times the end rots off and then the fumes leak into car via body breach or just wift up into the door window .
never stop in deep snow , in this condition , it has killed many.

midas man. (or GM take it )
