I have heard that adding 3 oz. acetone to 10 gal. gasoline will improve mileage and throttle response. I work with a guy that tried it on his 2001 1/2 ton chevy with a small block and he said he had more power and got 2 mpg more by adding the acetone. A friend of his tried it and also saw and increase in mileage. I have read some about this on the net and there are as many arguments for it as against it. I read that fuel addatives have acetone in them so it shouldn't hurt the engine or fuel system. Has anyone tried this? If so, what were the results.
from what i read it atomizes the fuel better. the solvent pulls the fuel molecules apart for a better burn. therefor the computer interprets andless fuel is needed. damn i feel all scientific and $h!t!!!!!
Not to say this is 100% correct but this guy says after soaking parts in heavy acetone mixture showed very very very little to no decay of the fuel system parts. the fuel system was made to hold up to this kinda stuff, the real risk is if you spill it on something, ie. spill a drop on the paint while you adding it to the tank.

From that website:

Acetone is known to deteriorate cheap plastics and other substances. While the components in a car's fuel system should be of high quality, and thus immune to any deleterious effects from exposure to acetone, be aware that "ideal" is not always the case in practice. Be advised that not all systems have been tested against acetone. Until such thorough testing has been accomplished and certified by a accredited authority, you assume your own liability for experimentally testing acetone in your particular system.
In a new car, I might not be concerned. But for those of us driving Trackers/Sidekicks that are around 15 years old, this doesn't sound like a very good idea.
