I don't believe that any of the first gen models had a knock sensor. Grand Vitaras have them and some Jimny models with the M13 engine. My year 2000 first gen with the 8V G16a engine doesn't have one and neither does my 1999 Baleno 16V engine (G16b with distributorless ignition.)

also do not forget ( tongue in cheek)
to try:

Volatile organic compound - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

MEK , methyl ethyl ketone (really bad for lungs)
Nitro Glycerine.

and nitro Methane.

and oil based paint tinner.

Ammonia

Benzene ( more cancer causing agent)

Chloroform

Diethyl Ether

Hydrogen Cyanide

Toluene

lamp oil

xylene (cancer causing , do not try it.)

LNG

or start at link, and work down the list , one of these might be cheap and might help MPG.
but in the end , gasoline is only $1 a liter (about).

you cant beat that?. ( unless you have a subsidy )

Acetone REALLY works.
It increases low end torque, which may or may not increase mpg, depending on your driving style.

To me it increases acceleration, without straining the engine.
So it saves me time, which is more important to me than saving gas.

Mythbusters used way too much acetone in their tests.
