I just picked up an 89 sidekick auto, pretty stock. The previous owner stopped using it because of bad fuel economy. It stalls when cold and takes a couple of minutes to get a stable idle, once it is warm it hesitates on take off quite a bit, and then it goes alright. I can hear a small leak pre-cat I believe, when I cover the tailpipe it becomes louder. The CEL works normally, turns on when key is on , and turns off when the car has started.
I have read through a lot of posts and got very good information. I am wondering if anybody has any suggestions as to where to start.

varies world wide the configs.
tell exact engine type. and Fuel set up.
also what missing, or modified.
EGR, CATcon, ?
tell that and we can get 30mpg on highway or close.
I just (finally ) got that myself, , last fix was 195 Deg. F. Thermostat.
ECU on older cars are dumb. it will never throw a code for poor ops.
it thows codes only for catastrophic failures. like an open TPS or something shorted to ground.
yes and any leak on the manifold(exh). will throw lots of illegal oxygen on the OXY sen.
this will force the car rich. ( to match the oxy )
unless ecu detects this gross fail (unlikely in 89) and then drop you to 13:1 AFR saving some gas.
if not , it runs like a pig. (15mpg reported by many here)
Damn, 30mpg? I have a stock 95 2 Dr 4X4, 16V auto with 144K on the clock and am OK with getting 25mpg. Was it the 195 stat that did it? Just did a tune up upon purchase 6 months ago.
If you've got the 3 spd auto you won't get 30mpg. Tracka96
right. It also depends on what kind of fuel you are using. I live in Arkansas, where we do not use ethanol blends, and I can get 30 mpg with my 5 spd. I went to Missouri this weekend, where state law requires at least 10% ethanol in their gas, and I only got a little over 25 mpg. Ethanol blended gasoline is not as efficient as regular gasoline.
Thar she is. 3 spd auto with that stupid ethanol. Based on corn. Feed is made of corn, so in addition to ethanol being crap for my rig there is a shortage for feed for livestock, etc which drives up the cost of food at the market.... where will it all end up?? Suppose I should learn to hunt and kill the feral pig family (10) on my land. Bacon was $5-$6 today at the store.
