Default Diesel Timing

I own a 2.0td, its a 97 model, the problem i have is slow starting and smoke, its smoke on start and acceleration , sometimes black smoke and sometimes white. I took the car to a local garages and he tested the car, he said the problem was the diesel pump timing solenoid and he could replace it at a cost of £400 . I then called Suzuki to get a price and the claim there is no such solenoid on the pump. Could it just be the timing is out on my car causing it to overfuel and thats why its smoking and this nice mechanic is trying to rip me off

Yes it could. But adjusting the timing may require special tools and procedures.
