Hi Rhinoman,

I have a 1994 Vitara 5 door. It failed its MOT cos its idling too fast. Suzuki Lea Bridge road charged me £74 to tell me they dont know what is wrong with it, and I should scrap it co its old, and buy a nice new one for £19,000. I bought an X-trail instead, but I'd like to fix the Vitara. I have 30 years experience at embedded programming, and plenty of years rebuilding engines.

It was overheating cos the rad was blocked and the thermostat was jammed open. I replaced the rad and thermostat with brand-x ones, and now it wont get hot, even twoing a caravan up hill!

Suzuki say the fast idling might be because the thermostat is opening too cool (its stamped 83 deg, but they say it opens at 65). It definitely opens and closes, but its hard to measure the temperature!

I drive past high wycombe quite often. (live in Hackney, work in Abingdon)

your stat is crap. get a real one. (sorry for brutal truth)
anything under 158 degrees F. freezed ECU in the warmup algorithms. for ever.

get a 195F super hot stat and she will get fabulous MPG.

90deg.

your stat is either stuck open or the wax pellat is missinng or collaped in the guts of it.

the gas you are wasting will buy a new one in 1 hour.

put the old one in a pan of water and roast it , it will open way too soon.

I use a STANT brand and it is , super.

you mechanic is a capalistic pig, oink , oink..

heheheheheheh

i bet we can make that vitara run like new with few parts.

let us help.

Sounds like you need to get a new thermostat. 65 degrees is 149F which is a bit low. My FSM gives over 55 degrees as normal operating temperature though so you should be out of the warm up enrichments.
I wouldn't fancy doing Hackney to Abingdon every day.

I haven't looked for a source of those connectors yet, are there any markings on them?
You shouldn't have to deal with the Windows API in BCB, if you use the library components all that is taken care off. OO can be a difficult concept to get your head around at first, I took a course at the local college. There is a good book available on-line:

Bruce Eckel's MindView, Inc: Thinking in C++ 2nd Edition by Bruce Eckel

The title is apt, it really is a different way of thinking compared to non OO languages. A lot of people just end up writing C code in C++ syntax.

I'm currently writing C software for the diagnostic interface and for my test set. I now have the USB bootloader working so I can reflash down the USB link. The test set uses a modified Velleman K8055 PCB with a FLASH USB processor and my own firmware. I've run the MAP sensor through it so I can detect the EGR opening and drop the MAP reading so I should be able to get round the code 51 problem. Initially MAP will be controlled by a pot or the PC, VSS and O2 will be PC controlled. Later I'll expand the PC control functions so I can take the ECU for a virtual drive.

Is it the same connector that is used by other GM cars? If it is then I think that I have a source in Hong Kong. I bought some OBD2 connectors from them some time back. I've emailed them and they say that they have these - no details yet.
