Default Whats the diffrence........

Between the 8v & THE 16V.........BESIDES THE OBVIOUS!

Why two diffrent types of motors?
What's the HP & tourge rating on each?
How can you tell which of the two tht you have?
Which one is the better motor?

The 16v was an advancement or added feature introduced in the middle of the tracker/Sidekick's production run. I don't remember the exact years, and it varied by market.
You can google the specs for each yourself.

If you know the year of the truck in question, you can know which engine it was born with. Looking under the hood its obvious. 8v have a simple stamped sheet metal head cover, while the 16v have an elaborate cast cover that has "Twin cam" or "16 Valve" written on it.

The 16v makes more ultimate power, but the 8v makes more low end torque (I think?) and its much easier to work on.

same motor ,diff pistons, diff head 16v obvious sorry, breaths better with 16v and makes lots more power , with MPI.
it also has a completely differrent EFI system installed.
8v uses Speed density system with MAP and TBI.
16v uses Mass Air system and has a MAF and MPI injectors.

the 16v is best suited for 4 doors and lots of extra weight .

usa most kicks with 16v are 92 to date. 1.6 and 1.8 Liter, ( 1.8L have chain cams)
but may 8v were made from 89 to 95. mostly in 2 door light weight kicks.

other markets can vary wildly as poster said, including V6.
and carbs up to 1999 in Europe.

lots of variance outside USA , and far away from draconian EPA.

bid boda boom, empty wallet , empty checking , full Visa. about $2k for most or $1000 or the JDM and pray.
but on this car the belt is easy, way easier than a v6.
can be done on a saturday after noon with the parts box full and shot gun plan.
cheers

PS; soon there will be these new fancy belts coming, out called HSC or something like that, tough like titanium.
I believe the race guys already use them.

designed for 150k +

Id pay $100 for one.

So what is the best timing belt that is currently available? Is the OEM the way to go, or are they all the same?
I just bought my Sidekick with 106000 mi. Changing it might be a good idea

none are same.
all mfg make diff, quality belts. (like all things really)

I run Gates, but there are many nice belts out there,
Id run from any China made no brand name belts.

there are some belts being marketed for $7 or so, they are all junk. run.
