IMHO that pink thing ,is just a MAF torturing device,
you really want the air coming in STRAIGHT as an arrowr, this thing brings it in at 90 degress and this will cause turbulance, that is bad for any maf. (bad news IMHO)
If you had an 8v engine this would be ok.

click my egr page and read that, it explans the full horror of EGR. see it?

pushing the diaphram, will cause the engine to stall, or almost stall.
this action lets exhaust dump into the induction , wrecking combustion, thus the die off or almost stall. it is a test right out of the FSM manual. on EGR. Normal is DIE or almost.
the egr path can be blocked or open.
both have bad effects.
stuck open a bit , will cause bad idle. and can be random.
blocked , will set code 51 and will make car to goto limphome wrecking AFR and performance.
The EGR must work on these cars or the ECU will get kinda crazy.
all 94 and newer have strick rules for EGR ops and monitoring by ECU.
And all years, 89 to present in PR, california.

on a car this old , the IAC will be dirty.
the car may have cracked vacuum lines.
this car may have COKE under the throttle plate make it stick open (bad)
one can prop open the throttle with a wood stick and clean way back where butterfly
comes in almost contact with the bore. this plenum side can get really filthy.

this , all of what I said is standard for all cars.

coking, what is that , well that is what you get when PCV gasses , collide with EGR gases. The result is something that locks like what you would scrap out of a chimney on a coal stove. black , sticky tar, gunk. I call it coke.
All cars do this , some worse than others, but they all have this.

Yep, I just had the fun cleaning the cruddy coke out of my 8v's head, intake maniford and misc. plumbing...
It gets much worse when you have leaky exhaust valve seals throwing oil into the exhaust stream.

this is how my idel got to 1500rpm i cleaned the COKE out started it up went right to 1500 but i did not have the sensors hooked up i just had the cone filter on so i think why it did that

i pressed it up down on the sides nothing is moving or am i touching the wrong thing and the pic above is not the EGR

i found a location for the other sensor and it runs good idel is between 800 - 950 and does not drop like it did before, well at least it has not happened yet. it used to drop even with the stock airbox on

james is right about seals , and riings getting older, more bypass gasses make bigger mess faster.

i am glad to see , you kept at least 1 of the 2 intake resonators.
the make the air flow smooth and not jumping around.
smooth makes MAF very happy.

get a good idle takes All things perfect and then after all is well , you can set it
up on top of the Throttle body.
see next post and rubber cap #7

Default idle adjust , hot.

the TB

see cap, pull cap , see screw.
bingo twist away, its just an air screw.
if it has no effect ,then you have an air leak. or if it can only go faster, same.

Idle killers.
IAC dirty
throttle plate dirty.
leaking hoses.
bad need of tune up.
or ECU has detected a bad sensor and is working hard to simulate it, and desides to just give up on idle. ( the ECU is like a drunk clown, the juggles many bowling pins , but if he starts to over load, he just throws the Idle bowling pin on the ground and juggles away, fooling the crowd and everyone, but me. I saw him do that ! David Copperfield you are not]

If you like Computers , you might find this interesting.
these computers loop the code from end to end ,never stopping.
"no threads" (yes, subroutines)
but if the ecu has to slow down, it detects this and starts making important decisions, #1 spark , #2 Fuel, #3 timing . then if time, other things.
idle may be on the low list. in fact we have lots of witnesses to this.

the computer also has monitors.and I have seen it stop them.
one person here even saw ECU , having grave difficulty flashing out code 12.
the pulse were all drawn out, slowly.

ok , just thought Id put out some dope on these old ECU's.
I swapped mine out ,so I can watch it all live. with new Modern ECU.

On this car one can only tell if you are in closed loop by monitoring the OXY out put with a scope. or looking with a factory "Techone" scanner.
They really needed a dash lamp for that. would really save fuel.

ok,have fun and good luck with our old buggy.

cheers
