Finally gotten around to cleaning and straightening up the engine compartment of my '90 Tracker and have noticed that the battery holder has some corrosion, not terrible bad, but could use some work. The platform is still stable, but the sides and hold down points are either gone or really weak.
I plan on scraping and primer/painting it and am thinking of getting one of those plastic battery boxes.
Wanted to see if or what some of you guys are using.
The original is spot welded on, but it wouldn't be hard to drill and bolt a replacement in.
One thing I didn't appreicate was Suzuki putting the brackets and connectors for the brake and fuel lines right under the battery box where corrosive fluids can trickle down on it...
I used naval jelly to stop the rust and then sanded and primed....then I installed a generic battery tray and hold down using stainless screws to secure the tray to the existing metalwork....it is very secure.
A plastic tray is the best defense I think, also clean and paint the metal if needed, make sure the battery is good with no leaks.
If one is not in need of paint I might clean it and coat with oil.
Maintenance is the key.
I used to work with acid, corrosion is never stopped, just controlled.
