Default 1990 geo tracker front wheels not pulling

i have a 1990 geo tracker 4x4 with manual hubs.

i have taken the hubs apart and cleaned/lubed them. when turning them to "lock," it feels like they're locking.

when i shift the transfer case to 4H or 4L, the propeller shaft to the front turns, but when trying to go up a hill, the back wheel will just spin. it's as if the front wheels aren't pulling.

is this a transfer case problem or more like the hog head in the front?

thanks for any advice...

Is there a viscous clutch in this system?

hey,

thanks for the quick reply...

i'm not sure what or where a viscous clutch would be. is it part of the tranny/transfer case system or part of a manual tranny?

my tracker has an automatic tranny with 4WD.

if the front drive shaft is turning then its not a tranny or transfercase problem....your front wheels are not locking, so i assume since you serviced them, you probably didn't put everything back the same way they came out...double check your work

front locks , one or the other are not locking.

jack up one wheel. put car in 4wd first. and 4th gear. ( or park , if auto, you didnt say)
turn lets say the left wheel . off the ground.

when you turn this wheel it must be locked. if not just look at the front axles and front prop shaft.
if the front prop shaft spins, then 4wd is NOT engaged.
if right axle spins, the right locker is bad.
if left does not spin, the left axle is not locked.

one wheel test. not to hard.

thanks for the quick replies. i will check it this weekend, and see what i come up with.

i did notice when i took the hubs apart, they were actually assembled opposite each other. so, i think the person before me didn't know how they went together. the gear on the inside of the hub has a section that looks almost stripped out, it's missing teeth. does this part go towards the inside or the outside of the hub.

(just used jtgh's site for the hub instructions. i have to redo those too. they are not assembled correctly. LOL)

i have they haynes repair manual, but it doesn't get that detailed.

it's an auto tranny, btw.

i believe my hub page has a link to someone heres web page with a beautiful
hub rebuild photo show.

oops, here it is:
http://myweb.cableone.net/bcanderson...al%20Hubs.html

nothing better anywhere , on earth this page.
guy did a great job, huh?
see missing teeth, that is normal.
the key for me was not removing the spring,
I power flushed it in a solvent tank, then bead blasted it , and then tanked it again
to get out the grit , followed by light greasing, with GP marine grease.
they are expensive and warrant , careful attention, IMHO.

do my axle test above, it only takes 5min to do that.
just lift if left front wheel and have at it, chock rears properl.

cheers

neither does the shop manual detail these, they assume it is throwaway,
hahahah
that's a joke,
i took a punch and punched a indent on both base and cap, so I could put it back together without guessing, or fiddling it..
do same with CV and prop shafts, it is a way all mechs work, mark everything.
