So my CEL is back with code 24 (Vehicle Speed Sensor). My Haynes has a section on the VSS in the 1992-1998 Trackers, but no mention of the 1991 Tracker. I have the factory service manual for the 1989 Tracker, but at least some of the schematics are different, so I don't know whether I can rely on that. I do have a Chilton they brought in for me at NAPA last week, but I ran out of money and can't really go buy it until someone shows up off craigslist and buys more of my extra tires or my soft-top...
So, is the VSS on the 1991 likely to be close enough to the 1989 I could debug it based on the specs in the 1989 manual? Or would anyone have the specs/diagnosis/adjustment instructions for a 1991?
three are 2 vss.
you forgot to tell us what you are driving.
91 ?
manual , or auto.
8v or 16v.
if manual you have one vss in speedo.
if auto you have 2 , one in speedo and 1 in tranny tail.
i will assume you have a manual.
this is just a clicker device in the speedo.
the fsm says, unconnect the plug to it and put a continuity meter on it, ohms meter is best and Rx1 range , and then pull speedo cable at the tranny.
see plastic gear on end, now spin that, it should click 10 times per turn, or is it 1 time per ten turns, no matter if it clicks its good.
click means , 0 then infinity ,then 0 , repeat
the silly purpose is to count up 60k miles and light the equally silly ses lamp function of the CEL lamp.
I call this the Service lamp.
if you need schematics hollar.
they all have it, I think. up to 95.
it is just a magetic reed switch , i think that is what is inside it.
the plug might just be loose too.
if you need more data let me know.
The Automatic VSS is a whole different nightmare.
it monitors for slippage, bad, and it also monitors both for TCC lockup.
46mph , and TCC can lockup. (the 4sp auto monitors both VSS sensors said to say)
that can be a real pain. hope not your issue.
Cool. Though, before I even do that, if the CEL comes on because the mileage switch trips, would it set a code? Because if that's all it is (odometer's at 255xxx, which might be close enough to a multiple of 50,000...), then I should find the switch first before pulling the dashboard apart
But from my read of the manuals, the mileage-based CEL switch is totally indepentent of the ECM, so if that were the case I'd expect a code 12 out of the ECM even if the CEL is on?
your manuals, haynes,? ( they cant get anything right)
the ECU counts the clicks, that is it , when it calculates 50k 80k whatever , it glows the CEL,
your statement is true for an old jeep but not true on old Kicks.
jeeps had a standalone clock. SES nag box, that we all removed.
this car is diff. it counts clicks, every one.
makes sense right?, why spend money on hardware when ECU an count till the cows come home. and sure enough that is what it does.
if the clicker breaks, the Monitor detects it and sets a unique code for it.
it is useless but who wants his CEL on all the time, no me , I want it to come one for
something real.
My car I have the SES switch unplugged, this stops SEs FOR ETERNITY.
But inside it still counts. and must.
Code 12, if SES is Active , the lamp stays on, making code 12 impossible to see.
The lamp IS SHARED.
Well, after a good half-hour of searching, I failed to find the SES switch anywhere, so I'm concluding some PO unplugged it to make the nagging go away FOREVER
So next step will be to take the dash apart to throw a continuity meter at it... I assume the speedo cable just pulls away from the board in back? Couldn't get a good look at it, and didn't want to pull too hard and break the circuit board. That would not be a good, on the good-bad scale... Or are there any doohickeys that have to be located by feel and released first?
Rudar, if I am correct, I dont think our Cdn trackers have that switch. JTGH will confirm this. That must mean you have an ECU situation. Have you pulled and checked the ECU?
As far as the speedo cable goes, I get mine off reaching between the panel and the dash, JTGH has mentioned reaching up from down under. (Tougher if your old an stiff like me). Just remove the four screws in the speedo panel assy, pull it out as far as poss, and you can get at the cable. Or go Jerrys route, lay on your back, head jammed between the brake and the gas pedal, trouble lite laying on your chest getting it rather warm, and snake your arm up between wires, cables, steering column, braces and brackets until you get to that cable and pull it off. While you are laying there you can see lots of neat stuff, your ECM box, fuel pump and main relays, and on the firewall your
ABS box. Have fun. Kelikran

vss is on all FED USA cars.
NO ABS only RWAL.
not on Canada cars unless you have Curise control.
so yours either has USA puter or cruise opted comptuer installed.
or has cruise at origional build and subsiquently removed.
but the dang switch is missing on Canada parts list. E28 imports.
ohm meter to ground, see traces marked, R.S. at 4 pm next to speedo jack.
one could test it at ECU pins.
unplug ecu, connect meter to pin. A15 ( A = white B= Green) connector.
connect other lead to ground,
raise 1 rear wheel and rotate wheel car in neutral , front wheels chocked.
see pulses, no dash removal. if not pluses. then speedo comes out.
the vss is just a mag/reed switch, tapping it can unstick it,
this is all in the cruise control , FSM.
dont canada folk sometimes buy usa cars, walk over ,drive back.
not legal here but I think you guys got more freedoms there. eahhh.?
Id like to take bus to canada and buy smart car and drive back and keep it. but sigh, not legal.
