Finally got around to more maintenance... Putting in a radio, which involved taking the dash apart So the back of my instrument cluster looks like this:
Any chance anyone (and by anyone, I pretty much mean jtgh ) knows which pins on the connectors I should be hooking the ohmmeter to? Haynes is useless, Chilton on order, and the FSM I have is from the wrong year...
Also, if in fact the VSS isn't ticking at this level, is it fixable? I seem to remember some instructions for checking the VSS which said if it isn't working, get a new instrument cluster, which seems over the top. Doesn't look like I can removes the relevant bit from this side, so would I open the whole cluster (four golden/coppery screws at the top and bottom, would be my guess?), and hope it'll be obvious where the reed switch is and what to do to it to make it work?

looks like it does have vss, black/yell A1 (gnd) and Yell wire A2.
there are 3 connectors , C = SES 3 wire slide switch.
A= 12 pins
B=10 pins
A1 is ground black yell ( if open , fuel and temperature gauge go dead)
A2 = sold yello, connect ohms or buzz box to A1 and a2, it must click.
warning the Yellow wire also goes to the cruise control model if this module grounds out the yellow wire, VSS will be dead. so unplug it.

look of solid yellow wire to find location and side.
connect meter, on low rx1 ohms and set sonic mode to meter.
then you must get 4 beeps per 1 revolution of the speed, jack center piece.
that is it.
yes, you can get new speedo, wrecking yard and suzuki or geo.
but make sure you know waht head you have there are many.
no tach, yes take and meters in diff. location. but all are simular .
and wire up same. it is the look and the tach missing issue.

Awesome! Thanks for the diagram. Now, things start getting seriously strange... First, a better picture of the backside of the instrument cluster, if you are collecting such for posterity...
Note the screws on the back. There's two silver ones on the left, and two yellow ones on the right near the speedo cable that are structural: they do not make contact to a coppery patch exposed through the Printed Circuit Board. Then there's three silver screws in a row on the left, and two sets of three in triangles in the middle. These, I presume, are how signals get from the doohickeys we'll visit in a minute to the connectors (minor discrepancy: There's only two on my cluster, while the diagram you sent shows three) Now, note three holes in a vertical line to the right of the speedo cable. Note in particular how a) there's no circle of exposed copper on this side of the PCB, and b) there's no screw through the board there.
Exploded view. Notice how the screw triplets identified in the above paragraph line up with the tach, water temp, and fuel gauges, respectively. Notice how there's nothing on the side of the odometer that appears to be designed around the idea of connecting to the PCB in any way.
Close-up of the speedo. I'm assuming the thing in the upper left is the reed switch we've been discussing. For what it's worth, the reed doesn't appear to move any which way when one turns the speedo cable connector. But that's rather academic, because there's no form of electrical connection between its two sides and anything that connects to the PCB and thence to the connectors and eventually the ECU.
This is the diagram in Haynes, for the 1992-1998 VSS. Notice how it shows the relevant conductors on the PCB going to the two lower holes to the right of the speedo cable---the ones that, on my unit, aren't connected to anything.
So, given that my ECU is complaining about the VSS, and my instrument cluster shows clearly that it's never had one hooked up, what gives? Is it possible that my ECU is using code 2-4 to refer to some entirely different problem??

both my prints USA and Canada show A1/A2 wiring to ecu,
but is it possible that they use a common harness and Canada ECU does not monitor VSS?
very strange what you describe.
91 canada speed head has center temperture guage (usa on right side)
heads:

-61a00 usa federal 48
look at last 4 digits of ECU, behind left speaker. bottom of ECU there is a white can color tag. 1inch by 2"
33920- some thing
and on the bottom row, is US-MT, US-AT or Can-MT, etc. just need a flash light to see it. this tag.
your close examination of the PC traces is RIGHT ON, if a1 and a2 dont go to a reed switch then your speedo is VSS free.
also messing is the SES switch 3 pin jack, 50k,80,100k nag light and slide switch plug in to this jack on the back of speedo head.
my Suzuki Canada 91 manual has this nice print set and it clearly shows SES switch but on your head it is missing.
it is common practice for shade tree mech to just use any 8v or 16v ecu , if it starts, AOK. then unplug the CEL.
one other issues
under hood, lookup under hood (or?) there is white and black smog sticker.

(which doesn't look at all like any of your numbers, so maybe I'm looking at the wrong sticker? Or it's from a suzuki, and they use a different scheme?)
But it is strange that I drove near a thousand miles over a couple of months without the CEL coming on, if in fact it's coming on because of a mismatch between the ECU and the cluster...
Cool, thanks for the edits. I guess unplugging (or just ignoring) the CEL is an option; but then I wouldn't get told if something else, more serious, goes wrong. I'd just have to pull the codes every week or so to see. Less than an ideal solution, but if the only other one is to replace the ECU, it'll have to do until I have some spare cash.
yours is GM geo tracker 91. and for sure the ECU is USA mT.
i dont have a GM part number book , so cant look it up.
Yes the Tracker is marked with half GM PN and half Suzuki PN and in most cases
part is same , only # is diff. ( most lighting and speedos can be diff, in all countries)
My car is tracker too and 91 , and my origional ECU is missing I have the Suzuki one.

that is a USA ECU no dought of that.
the gmpartsdirect.com site , does not list the Pn, only the name, jokers.
they are afraid you might get number and shop else wheres.
and when you email them , no help ,with out VIN, so if you ask what car
3390-5683 this comes from ,you get no respose, not a bunch of nice people at GM.
that is why i send all my orders to Suzuki. No wonder their profits in usa stink , huh?

62090 decodes to Canada car, but made in Japan for JX 90 (oops wrong speedo)

for got to say , the PL shows vast numbers of different speedos all over the world
other than lighting this is the most difficult to figure out, so darn many they are.

if we ever decode the GM ecu # , we will only find out that it is in fact counting clicks,
as the CEL tells , with nagging regularity. (sorry to say)
and that you have found the problem, your expert looking at flex PC ( i met the lady that held the patent for flex pc , rich lady she is) shows that the Reed switch is NOT wired to A1 and A2 ,and IT must.(for your ecu)
how ever , the vss is not used for manual transmisson , like on some kicks, with 4sp Hydramatics..
and it is not used for SES ,as yours is missing the SES connector at read speedo and switch (blessing that is, and mine , i ripped it out)
and the vss is now only good for running cruise.
if you dont have cruise. you could ,
get new speedo from wrecker. (one with clicker vss)
or make a 555 timer chip , that just licks 4 times a second and fool the ECU. < easy to make , now guarantee we can fool ecu.
or 60a32 ECU.
The VSS monitor in that ECU is not too smart, with a manual 5sp it never nows if you are parked or moving . It must make fancy guessing.
i think if you car is idling, it ignore is, then after not idling and after a long time
it monitors that the switch is clicking. ( seperate from Cruise func)
really, it needs , in gear and clutch out to know you are moving. and no clicks.
so the software will be very crude, and insensative. due to lack of data.
It would Only report VSS fails, on long periods of inactivity. (might help to explain your experience)

even 1 click a minute might work. ECU says this guy drives like grandma, but is happy none the same.

It has no cruise control, and has no badging other than "Tracker" left (oh, and a "Don Quest" signature, but I have no idea who that is or why he was signing cars...), so I dunno what trim level it was. It has no SES switch under the dash, and, as we've discovered, nowhere on this cluster to connect one. But I think we're concluding that neither the instrument cluster *nor* the ECU is original to this car, right?
