pump up tires to TIRE MFG. maxiumum pressure. ( go to OEM tire mfg site and find it)
drive slower on free way. 60 max. use slow lane to avoid, Kamakazi SUVs with cell phones glued to ears.
take paths to work that avoid lights, try to keep speed at 45mph as much as possibe.
this car gets max mpg at 45mph in cruise control.
buy oil stock. ( this will offset the cost at the pump, FOR REAL NOT A JOKE)
when uncle same made me live in LA for 6months (long beach NAV.ship yard then)
i leaned to drive in LA traffic,
i learned to avoid lights but driving side streets, I learned to make 3 right turns to make a left. I learned to drive thru back side of strip malls to avoid, 20 minute lights.
GET a map and learn all the back roads to work.
you'd be amazed what is possible .
zero MPH is the killer, avoid it like the Plegue.
95 16V, A/C, 4X4, soft top 2 door Tracker-- 25MPG with Hawaii gas at $3.82 and climbing. My 97 Tahoe with 4" lift and 33's, 5.7L V8 sits under a tarp- driven 2 times/month for 10-15 miles...
My 96 has got just over 200K but has a new/used motor and tranny, It's 1.6L 16valve 2WD with AT,PS,PB,A/C soft top, I get about 28MPG with highway tires, I do as JTGH said backroads!
EDIT: The 28MPG is local I get over 33MPG highway!
Most people will not belive this but my 96 tracker 4WD, 16 valve with 121,000 get between 34-36 MPG! I check it at every fill up!. It was hard for me the belive it at first too. I hardly ever drive the speed limit and never over it, for the fact gas is just to much now. I usually drive about 40-45MPH. Yeah, it is a little slower than most drive but it sure makes a difference at fill up time. I drive 50 miles a day to work on 2 lane roads in the mountains of West Virginia. Sure can't complain about the little tracker with that kind of mileage! It has been a good vehicle for me and goes like a tank in the winter.
24mpg 5spd 4x4.
16v...i think.
141,000 miles
80% local
20% hwy
I have regulat hwy tires, not knobby ones.
most of my trips are very short. I fill up every 2 to 2 1/2 weeks
I check my mileage route with 2 gps units and 3 different vehicles; 48 mile round trip, down hill 6% grade, then back up the hill every evening. 1990 Tracker tin top, 30 x 9.5 x 15 Dunlop Mud Rovers. Drive at 70 mph down hill, at 50 mph max back up the hill ( that's as fast as it will go, 125,00 miles). In the end I get 20 mpg. The drive is from 7500 ft down to 5400 ft and back up.
