My Moms 91 Tracker had a while where it would run great for a while and then just act up and when it did it would run badly and not pull hills and acted like it was choking out here is what we changed,
Plugs.
Wires.
filters air and gas filter.
Brand new dist.
Vaccum hoses.
new electric (Spelling?) choke.
Many new relays.
It turned out the timing belt had jumped time luckly it was just one slot it moved so the valves where fine, "the person we got it from had changed the blet but didn't tighting it down right" So we put a new one on it and it runs fine now, But it's just not getting the gas mileage it should, It should get about 28-31 but it's only getting in the lower 20s, What do you think I should change next? Any help would be GREAT!
By the way it's a 91 Tracker 2WD, 5 Speed, 8 Valve EFI, Plus it does not have A/C or Power steering.
hi buddy.
no chock on these things. was that the IAC idle valve? or injector.
you are AOK , this puppy is free running. NO CAN HIT VALVES with pistons.
check engine lamp is it on key one, no start then out will running.?
next sensor, we can measure them, it is easy is
ECT.
new oxysen
lower 20s can be ok in town, 22-25 mpg range?
measure ECT sensor , hot with ohm meter, net 200 or so ohms. hot.
ECT has 2 pins , find it here.
The part I called the choke is on the side of the thottle body it is round looking and has two bolts on it and has four wires the colors are Pink, Yellow, Green, Black. (I can take a picture of the old one if needed) It could have been the part the controls the Idle?
The check engine light is not on ever? It could have been took out before we got it? or its blown.
this is a Throttle postion sensor, TPS for short. it has 2 parts.
a POT. or variable resitance about 3000-5000 ohms in range and a TPS switch.
the switch must be calibrated to be closed at idle or ECU will nutz.
see my like above for finding parts. it is short and sweet and covers both 8v and 16v
find that ECT and measure it hot block.
Engine coolant temperature sensor, 2 pins,
see it here: http://carfix.stufftoread.com/TBI-1w.jpg
that device does 5 things.
1-while cranking (Wideopenthrottle WOT) signals Unflood mode , no injections
2-running WOT signals special rule for rich high speed passing.
3-provides enrichment whey you step on gas fast.
4- switch signals idle. or not.
5- fall back device if other sensors fail , like the map. (or MAF on 16v)
you must get the CEL working, this is very important to you.
it is just a lamp , behind the words, CEL and is same as the other lamps there.
it has a simple twist socket 90 degree turn and it is out.
This ECU is infamous for dying and not turn on this lamp for test , during keyon , no start.
Despite all the rumors and theories, this ecu does in fact have a Limp home chip.
that allows you to drive car even though ECU is dead. FSM , page , is linked on my ECU dead page, stating this fact. called FAILSAFE by suzuki.
the mode will produce about 1/2 power and be rich as a pig.
RICH and Retarded ignition timing. is its hall mark.
fix the lamp. taint hard. (there are 4 screw on outer side of dash cluster.
look for them , they are out of site , only for the casual look, they are there.
pull ring, more screws , right is site ,see them.
pull them , pull head a tad, fish in hands , pull lamp.
Alright thanks for all of the info! But I've got more questions? Do you think a ECU from a 4WD Auto 94 (Crashed) Would still be good the crash was on passenger side. If so will it fit in a 91 thats 2WD 5Spd? I'm not sure if these are the same or not? Or is it just a matter of matching up the numbers?
