Smile Need help from an "old foggie"

I need to do alot to a 1995, 2wd, manual shift,150,000 mile Geo Tracker that we purchased. But i am not very good when it comes to being a mechanic. But i am willing to learn, if someone has the patients with me. I have odered a Chilton manual for sidekick & tracker manual. I hope this will help me ? We bought this because of the MPG. I took it to my mechanic & he put a new seal on the top pan ( there was a bad oil leak ), I also had him put a new timing belt on. That was a big hit to my wallet. I had read that was something that needs to be done with that kind of milage ! I just got on e-bay & bought a rebuilt a/c compressor that needs replaced ($150). When were on the road & hits a bump it"s like a jack hammer hitting it ( any suggestions ) It's got a hard top , but it is real noisy. I have been looking for a new seal that we can put in, or something. The check engine light stays on ! Their is a place called Harbor freight that sells the reader that you hook up, can anyone tell me if i need one of these. Ok, ya'll have at it & let me have it. I can take it. Just remember i am not a mechanic, but willing to learn !! ------- Larry

You can & will receive alot of helpfull information from this site. I also purchased a used 1995 GeoTracker 5 Spd, 4 wheel drive with aprox 123,000 miles from an original owner.
For what it is worth, I purchased a "Used" Factory Service Manual from Ebay for $45.00. To date it has assisted me in eliminating my "Check Engine Lamp" issue, as well as rebuild the manual shift transmission in a 1994 Sidekick I purchased a few weeks ago, among major maintaince concerns. I have invested a few dollars in "at home" service repairs, but I have dedicated it to being my daily driver, as I travel aprox 170 miles per day with my job. I am currently averaging between 29 & 30 MPG. I recouped "all" my expenses (purchase price / auto transport to me / complete & through engine/drivetrain service / etc within 4 months. Needless to say, the investment for me has returned a great return. Now I get to "pocket" aprox 38 cents for each mile I turn from my company's mileage expense allowance.

Have patience and fun along the way

no need to buy an readers, all it takes is a paper clip to pull codes 89-95 (all)
your 2door car (right , my guess) rides rough, just like mine and just like the willies jeep in 1946 , and for the same reason. its an offroad vehicle , primarally and on road is a bonus.

you might just have EGR check lamp or something minor, as MPG is perfect. SOLID.
click my sig link below , full Lamp checks on all devices on car ,there and more.
ECU, Brakes, and Tranny. (not your tranny 5sp is manual )

i bought my 89 sidekick for the same reason a 95tracker .
i to put on between 150 and 275 miles a day . i have had it two weeks now and with the 3 speed auto , she is pulling a sound 30mpg as long as i keep my foot out of the peddle and cruse at 55-65 on the freeway .
in the last two weeks i have went through the front end . new bearings , breaks , dive shafts , seals struts and rear shocks . did it all for the cost the shop wanted for just re doing one side of the front end

today i changed the front crankshaft oil seal as well as the cam oil seal and replaced the timing belt . took all of 3 hours , not a hard job at all
total expense for today’s work was a waping 42 bucks and three hours of my time outside enjoying the day .

you can learn to do most all the work yourself .

as to the ride JT is right these rigs are short coupled and have very much a built in heavy ride just as any jeep would . HOWEVER there are things you can do .

Check the struts and shocks first . If its bouncy you need shocks . If you hit a bump and you here a metal on metal thump with alittle bounce after ,,, eather you hit the hole to fast OR but if you were going slow shocks and struts are probably in order .
This isn’t something just for trackers and sidekicks , it goes for all vehicles..

Today we have a lot better choices then we had in the 1970 , 80’s even early 90’s . so chose wisely. In today 4x4 market there is really everything from low end standard to high in dial a ride gas assist designed for off road use as well as highway . So you can tame the ride some what but you will never get the ride like you will from a larger vehicle.

My dodge 1 ton is like riding on silk , smooth as glass but the suspension design is different and it has the weight . So before you go out and spend a lot of money , spend some time talking to folks here . Listen to what they have to say . read the links folks send you to . if you dont understand them "sometimes it is confusing " ask for clerifications

Im sure you will find that it will save you lots of money in the end.

Not everyone is mechanically inclined . Most times I find these folks just simple are overwhelmed buy what the see or think they see .
don’t do this . Look at one item at a time . Concentrate on that one item , don’t get side tracked .
What im getting at is , if your going to change the oil . don’t worry about what makes the engine run, or about all the all the wires or smog control.
Its pretty easy now days to pop the hood and go ’HOLY C@$.

So lets start with your check engine light .
First go read TJ topics . Simply click on the bottom of his post where it says
carfix.stufftoread.com.
this will take you to
Jerrys main sidekick page

Click on his topic concerning the check engine light ,
Follow his instructions .
If you get confused , come back and ask .
We will help you . don’t be intimidated and don’t let other intimidate you .
Your learning something new . Doing so is always alittle difficult at first
