Default downpipe dilemna

Midas says I need a new downpipe...everything and the catalytic converter amounts to over $1000. Help. What are my alternatives?
Are there other names for a downpipe? Who else out there has had this problem?

Midas,
they will charge more then anyone on the planet. why midas, ?
ahhh that life time guarantee, but read the fine print first.

many alternatives.
DIY, or have it done.
Have it done ,just go to a no name shop and ask. It wont be 1k.
or buy the unit and take it to any generic muffler shop.

3 choices , neat huh?

be careful on exhaust
make sure provider knows
year, engine, 8v, or 16v, 2door or 3 doors, 4wd or 2wd.
some years have 6 systems. Including PR of california CARB junk.
code 33 on smog sticker of hood will denote CAL CAR.
find out what you really have first then leap.

JTGH
Thanks for your assistance and for suggestions on how to be more specific in posting problems/requests for advice. I visited your site and will revisit as needed. I am heading out to my car to gather engine info prior to ordering parts needed. Also, your info on the "check engine light" (common problem) will help as well.
