Default Escudo/Sidekick diff ratios

I have a 93 Escudo/sidekick auto 1.6 (16V) . I have a clicking in the diff region which I suspect is the spider cluster on its way out.Either that or a really bad R/H rear wheel bearing.Sounds bad but still drives OK . I,m doing the easiest first.
1. Change the oil. Put in Moreys Oil Conditioner.2 repack the wheel bearings. 3.Replace universal joints.
My gut tells me its the diff. I presume its a LSD ??
Recognising the diff ratios must be the same when replaced does anyone know what ratios I should be looking for ...is there a difference between manual /Auto gearbox ratios Has anyone had similar probs with this area. Thanks in advance

There is a difference in ratios, I believe manual trans is 5.124, auto 4.62, so you have to be careful. How many miles/km? Might just be a bad u joint?

Shes at 144,000 km and not to shabby. The noise rises with rpm . I put her on the stands last night and ran her up .. Still hard to really identify due to sound transfer It could even be a broken roller in a universal. Like I said easy
things first .. Thanks for the info re ratios

OK need help now with diff ratios .. The noise is getting worse and I have to replace the diff. So does anyone know how to find out the diff ratio of a 1993 G16A 16V escudo (sidekick) with auto 4 speed .. It must be on the vehicle somewhere? In a hand book ?
which I havent got ! maybe the gurus have a spec sheet somewhere in the archives..
Big thanks

4wd?
new U joints , first. they can telegraph noise like a MOFO. trust me.
there are up to 4 axle ratio's

on 93 it is 3 it think.
i uploaded the full spec.last week.
pdf 94.

94: data: usa not escudo , that aint here usa
manual 5.12, 8v auto 4.62, 16v auto 4.3:1

but best call your lock suz and ask them as not all countries use the same ring and pinions.

also, jack rear wheel and chock mark prop shaft and tire. now count the turns.
bingo ratio, in under 15min flat.
we posted this and a full web page just last week.
search. this forum.

Thank for the info..
Yeah I was on my way home trying to figure out how to check the ratio and it struck me .. this should be easy .. and you just confirmed it.
Lift one side , mark the tyre , mark the propshaft and turn. Should be a no brainer. Cheers

Why not rely on the door plate or run the VIN by a dealer to determine the ratio?

he/she didnt say what country. escudo, europe , not. SA, not, ...... i wonder what export model..... diff, markets, different parts.

bad rear universial joint,
before pulling propshaft the Transfer case will need draining. ( 4 wheel drive ?)

but if you are careful you can just unbolt it.. and put in 2 universals and if it fixes
the fix is cheap and easy, or you can spend a fortune and lots of labor and find out axle was good. ( and if you have primo brakes , you must swap old (good ones ) on the new junk yard axle ,etc....

BUT why guess. ?
Here is the safest and best method , if you can find a professional lift usage.

Put it on a lift , raise it 4feet (1 meter) then have a driver,
you get under, no loose clothing.
now cruise car is 5th gear at 1000 RPM. in gear. tires spinning. (be very careful)
The big lift makes all this vastly safer. see.?
with a cheap $3 mechanics stethoscope listen to the axle ends at the backing plate juncture, then the front pinion bearing point, then the main 3rd member carrier.
sound good.
bad U joints, but they DO TELEGRAPH ,the sound. ( they are Infamous for doing this)

I have heard bad U joints sound like they are UP front.

YOu could have a bad axle, listen left then right , (with stethoscope) and you anwer there is easy. right? one sounds like cra,p other purrs.

And no it's not LSD, is maximum slip or rather, all power goes to the wheel with the least traction. just spider and side gear axle. (no locking at all)

the VIN and the Enn E code will tell the dealer what you have. he needs both.
both if it is your countries practice of importing other market cars.

see next post for exact VIN decode out of OEM Suz.
