Default 4wd System Problem

I want mudding today on the abandoned railroad beds by my house an noticed when i want to shift from 4Hi to 4Lo my tracker made the noise a manual transmission makes when you shift gears w/o using the clutch but the thing i don't get is i was fully stopped an trans in neutral, any idea what i did wrong or what could be wrong with my tracker

98 Chevy Tracker 2-Dr 3-Spd Auto. 4x4

they are not syncros. so if the there is too much differential rotation, it will grind.

dont worry the magnetic drain plug will catch the shavings. LOL. (couldnt resist)

Yes, but the funny thing is that as long as you are stopped, and in neutral, there shouldn't be any grinding. Were you in fact stopped, and in neutral? I can shift from 4H to 4L on the go but I have to drop 2 gears and at the same time syncro the engine rpms, while "gently"
feeling it into gear. Sorry, this has nothing to do with your situation, having an auto. Something just occurred to me, if the gears didn't line up, causing it to not slide all the way into gear, then you would get grinding when you went to go. I would think this to be a rare situation, but I suppose it could happen. You can also try putting it right into park before shifting. And make sure the tx case goes all the way into 4L. I'm sure you won't have any more trouble, unless there is some big problem lurking in there. Let us know how it turns out.

I got the problem fixed, the linkage was lose an need adjustment.
